Screw Vtec -- check this out!

Found this completely by accident while searching around for some info on OHCs....

It's a new OHC variable-lift design developed by Delphi.
The file says it'll be ready for production in 2010...and it's almost too easy to guess who they're building this for...
(hint: they mention "HCCI"....)

As far as I know, Delphi (which spun off of GM some years ago) makes some of the stuff GM uses in their vehicles. And up until now, I don't think GM has any sort of variable lift technology. They've got cam phasing...but that's a timing adjustment.

Then the article mentions this thing's ability to work with HCCI...GM's the only company that's really looking into HCCI engines. The German's might be, too....but I don't think they buy from Delphi.

Overall...I thought this was a very interesting feature we may see on GM engines soon.

hmm, so for DOHC engines, so unless the ls architecture gets the boot, this will only be available on v6's and the various inline engines and north star engines (which i think are already on the chopping block) which are offered

Could this possibly be the first use of this design?

GM Media

Quote:
Global engine family
GM’s small four-cylinder gasoline engines include displacements of 1.0L, 1.2L and 1.4L. The engines were designed with fuel efficiency in mind, including technology such as full variable valve timing that optimizes power and fuel efficiency across the rpm band.

More importantly, torque for these engines – the pulling power that is felt when accelerating from a stop – is generated at lower rpm, for strong, off-the-line launches and confident acceleration at all speeds. Supporting powertrain features, such as torque converter design and transmission gearing, accentuate engine power and contribute further to the feeling of performance.

All engines in the family have premium design elements that contribute to world-class smoothness and durability, including:
  • Dual overhead camshafts
  • Roller-finger follower valvetrain
  • Chain-driven camshafts
  • Flow-controlled oil pump
  • Piston-cooling oil jets
  • Thermal management

Yeah, but they were already in trouble when my dad retired from them in 2006...and since their incompetent management just keeps digging deeper holes...

Basically its another piece of tech along with things like AFM and DI that gives you better fuel economy when you are just cruising around, and power when you want it. I think.
