With GM on the brink, what will happen to the Corvette?

Quote:
Some Corvette fans and avid forum members over at GM Inside News have already asked the unfathomable question of what automaker should take over the reigns of America's longest-running sports car if its parent company were to lose custody. Their answer, rather shockingly, was Toyota. We sure hope it doesn't come to that. Still, tough questions deserve thoughtful answers, and Motor Trend is asking away. Even if The General survives, what does the future hold for Team Corvette, which has seen its ranks diminished in the past few weeks with the loss of key players including Vehicle Line Executive Tom Wallace and John Heinricy, test-driver extraordinaire and director of the performance division?

With such important personalities retiring from the 'Vette project, one might wonder if GM's iconic performance car will lose out on planned development. That seems like a real possibility, but we need to realize that R&D funds may be better spent keeping the leaky company afloat, something that the Corvette isn't a major part of. At least there's an excellent, proven platform for the new team to build from.

Well to be perfectly honest, I can't think of any company that would maintain the spirit any better than Toyota. Certainly not "dime-a-dozen Ford" or "looks cool for about a week" Dodge. Toyota has a performance-driven concept in my opinion. The only thing more acceptable to me would be an independent company buying the division, and that would be really nerve-wracking in and of itself.

Anyway, I like the point already made...GM isn't going anywhere.

If Toyota takes control of the Corvette, I swear on all that is holy that I will buy a one way ticket to Japan and suicide bomb the Toyota headquarters.

Have you ever driven a Toyota or Lexus? The word appliance is the only word that fully sums up those products. Fun is to Toyota as not-badge-engineering is to GM. The cars are designed to show good results on paper, but on subjective qualities they're about as fun to drive as a video game car.

Whatever you're smoking I'd like to know... J/K

Toyota used to have some really great performance cars like the Supra, Celica, & MR2. I used to be a pretty big fan of Toyota when these cars were out, But Toyota slowly killed off these cars and they offer nothing worthy of being considered performance oriented... Unless you're talking about the Lexus IS-F... Toyota has done a HORRIBLE job of maintaining any spirit...

They've become too blinded with their global conquest.... I have no respect whatsoever for the Toyota of today...

Well, I guess it is possible I was living in the Toyota of the 20th century. I might have to retract my statement, but ONLY if someone can convince me that another company could do it better.
