I was looking into the 2SS/1LE and with adding a supercharger and a few other mods the cost was getting close to the ZL1 price, but the ZL1 will have a full factory warranty.

Get an L99.....You haven't experienced the true power or enjoyment of an SS model yet. Everyone knows the LS3's are inferior muscle cars anyway. With straight through exhaust, an air intake, and a tune, (and my crappy 100 dry shot), I get a full fender on this ZL1 in town here every time. I think altogether I spent 1500 dollars. Tally Ho!

Zl1. No question about it.even a highly modded ss does not compare.

Really it is based on what you want. If you already have mods you may want a supercharger. if car is mostly stock zl1 will save you money. I went with modding my ss because what i already had in it and what I already had sitting waiting to go in.
Would not say that there are a number of modded SS that will eat many zl1's for lunch and with custom body mods look as good or better then a zl1.

You can make the power with the LS3 in the SS but that engine block was not designed with supercharging in mind. Also, once you get the power in the SS, every other sub-system needs to be beefed up to hold it (clutch, rear end, axles, sub-frame inserts, etc. etc.). The ZL1 comes out on top in this comparison every time. I also had a modified SS and know first hand of what I have written here.

Even if everything but the suspension were the same I would get the ZL1 because of the Mag Ride.

I personally have never driven a ZL1....and here is the reason why. Probably because (according to 99% of the members here) is feels like such a different car.
I supercharged my SS and have done a lot of modifications...including an entire ZL1 appearance conversion (bumpers, exhaust, wheels, hood, ect..). I absolutely love it. The power is incredibly, drives great, and handles fantastic for how I drive. I bet it if drove a ZL1...I'd probably fall in love with how it feels (compared to my SS) and would want one! I say if you have the cash go for the ZL1....sounds like you can't really go wrong. You get the best of everything. If you're on more of a budget, go with the SS. If you really love your SS...never plan on selling or trading it in and have never driven a ZL1...just start modding the piss out of it. Trust me...you'll be happy with a modded, supercharged SS.

I never really cared for the ZL1 until I was at a Camaro5 dyno day at Vengeance' shop back in Jan. They really are cool rides but when it boils down to what you care about if its worth buying the ZL1 or upgrading the SS. My car is basicly on par with a mildly modded ZL1 in some areas and in some areas its not. the ZL1 has a supercharger, beefy clutch, big differential and axles plus bigger brakes factory. My car makes good power with my Paxton but I still don't have any of the other parts that ZL1s come factory with.

also keep in mind that the ZL1 coupe comes with several performance modes that select ranges of traction control, suspension, stabilitrack, etc, etc.
Mode 5 is DESIGNED for hard launches at a well-prepared drag strip. the car is designed to take this level of abuse/driving! if you opt for the automatic, let me just say, it ain't your daddy's powerglide.! |
