It is ADDICTING!
Seriously, just find some empty roads or parking lot to practice in, if you got it off the dealers lot you will be fine.
Just like I did. When the weather clears I'll be able to get more seat time. Driving a stick isn't as intimidating as I once thought however. It is a different experience so just be mindful and start off slow.

I'd avoid stop signs and traffic lights on hilltops for a while.

Find your clutch's "sweet spot." Go to a flat parking lot and practice releasing the clutch very slowly to get your car rolling without even touching the gas. That point where your car starts rolling forward without any gas is your "sweet spot." You're going to want to start applying gas during normal driving just slightly before that point.

BEWARE hillside assist.

Now I may get flamed for this but I'll share something someone did for me when I learned to drive a manual. In order to get the feel of the clutch and letting it out while it grabbed I did it in bare feet. The shoes get in the way of feeling it engage when you are learning to modulate the gas and until you get more comfortable this can help. I've used it while teaching others and it sometimes can help.

Good luck and as other have stated with a manual trans you get to really participate in the driving of the car rather than watching. Congrats, hope you love it as much as I do.
I drive in Vibrams frequently after the gym. It is considerably more difficult to get a smooth shift. It really puts you in tune with your car. It'll definitely help point out your sloppy points, especially in cold weather.

remember all the problems come from moving and doing things to fast. Stay patient at first and keep all movements slow until you get a good feel for clutch points. Will take a little bit, but boy is it worth it!

This is how I teach people to drive stick. Find that spot, then once you've learned it start doing it where you apply gas.

Wait you've never driven a stick before???? Oh, there will be some stalling, and grinding, and all that. You will learn, but it will definitely take some time. Good luck!

True statement! It's driving a car vs. just steering it!

I learned on a 1989 Hyundai Excel, and ended up delivering pizza with that car, so I went from not knowing how to drive a stick, to driving one, delivering pizza, counting money, shifting, etc... it definitely makes you more aware of your surroundings I would have to say. One thing I will say is I feel sorry for that clutch in your first few weeks.

Congrats on your SW SS.

What should you be mindful of when driving a manual transmission? Try not to "ride" the clutch if you can avoid it.

Oh, and you're going to LOVE sitting in stop-and-go traffic (it's good "practice"). A good thing for you you're up in Nova Scotia and don't have our rush-hour backups.

Well, actually.., you have FOUR (4) pedals to work and coordinate!

From left to right:

"Dead" pedal --> clutch pedal --> brake pedal --> accelerator pedal.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING to remember in helping to ensure your ability to master driving a manual transmission: you can only effectively operate a maximum of 2 pedals at any one time.

Confused?
