Question Smartphones + Camaro Stereo

My 2SS/RS should be getting delivered here in the next couple weeks. AT&T is offering me an upgrade to a new phone for renewing my contract, so I'll be jumping on that before my car arrives.

I currently have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS. I can't stand it not being jailbroken, which is why I didn't upgrade to iOS 4. This is also the reason I'm hesitant to upgrade to an iPhone 4 when the time comes to renew my contract. However, I'm looking to try another flavor of smartphone, and would like to try out the HTC Inspire, which is running the Android 2.0 OS.

The iPhone is supported without question as the 2SS has the iPhone PDIM installed from the factory. On the other hand, the HTC Inspire only sports a USB connection, which is another supported connectivity method in the 2SS. However, I don't know to what extent it will function when it comes to streaming music.

How successful have you folks been with getting music to play through the stereo over a smartphone connected through USB? My guess is the phone would be acting like a USB Mass Storage device, so it would just read it as if it was a USB Flash Drive.

If any of you have any experience in this realm, please let me know as it will not only mean saving a couple hundred dollars between the two phones, but to also enjoy the freedom of continuing to only carry my phone and have access to music.

Thanks in advance!

The iPhone will work without a problem. Connected through the PDIM the Camaro controls the iPhone as if you are tapping the buttons on the screen of the device. The USB connection allows you to hook up a USB Flash Drive, which the stereo then parses and navigates through by folder.

My concern is to whether or not the HTC Inspire connected through it's USB connection will be seen by the stereo as a readable USB Flash Drive, or if the stereo won't recognize the device at all.

I have an ancient 20GB iPod (the old fat ones), so I could use that even if the HTC Inspire doesn't work out. I just want to avoid carrying around two devices.

EDIT: Though I suppose I could just leave the 20GB iPod in the car at all times... might end up just falling back on that as it doesn't get used much these days as I have the iPhone.

However, any input is still appreciated!

I have a Captivate (Galaxy S). Couldn't be happier with a phone or a music player w/ the Camaro.

I have an HTC HD2 running Android 2.33 and WP7. Android runs perfectly, I pair it to stream music wirelessly and through the USB. Steering wheel controls work great and it shows track info on screen.

Yes, instead of using USB you can stream it through GM Music Connect. Once you do it wirelessly through the PDIM you can leave your phone where you want in your car and have it play through the speakers.

I ended up getting rid of my 8GB Nano for a 140GB iPod that could hold all my music. Works great plugged into the USB port.

Before the iPods, I used a 32GB Flash drive and that worked ok. It would always reset to the first song in alphabetical order (a song that, frankly, I got VERY tired of)...and I couldn't switch songs until it had loaded the directory EVERY time I started the car up.

I would think that any USB phone would also act as a flash drive, and you could put songs in the main directory to play them. Perhaps even keep directory structure...I don't remember if I kept my library flat or in folders with my USB drive.

You will be sorry leaving the iPhone! Those other smart phones do not respond like the iPhone touch screen - I've sampled a few.

As others have said, iPhone 4 seems to work without a hitch - even in the 2010s with its problematic PDIM. I can't speak to the HTC myself.

Also, iOS currently has a jailbreak up to 4.2.1, so you CAN get into v.4 and keep your jailbreak. However it's unlikely that you can get an iPhone 4 which hasn't been upgraded to the un-jailbroken iOS4.3 already... but that jailbreak (4.3.1, actually) is allegedly supposed to be released in the next week or so. I'm eagerly waiting...

Have you been a customer long enough to have the unlimited data plan? If so make sure you don't let AT&T not let you keep it. But if you're going to go for the iPhone I'd hurry, because Verizon ended their unlimited plan option a few weeks ago, so there's not much point to AT&T grandfathering in more and more people to stay competitive.

If you go through Bluetooth, you may notice a problem with sound quality, more so the louder you crank up the volume. I had this problem, even my new nav system it has this issue. You also may not be able to use the USB port to charge and use Bluetooth to stream off of. I had issues with that with my Nexus One and HD2.

I highly recommend to get a Metra dash kit and put in an after market deck, maybe one with navigation. Then just put a cheap iPod and use that with touch screen controls.
