Oil Level on Dip Stick
My oil was changed yesterday. 6q was added (v6), but I think the level maybe a little high.
Should the level extend into the 'cross hairs' on the top of the dip stick ruler?, or should the level go to the bottom of the cross hairs? I believe my level is 1/2 up the top 'cross hairs' My oil pressure gauge is jumping. ~30psi at idle and any acceleration over 2000 rpm the psi jumps to 70, or just over. I took it real easy driving into work today. I read many threads here about 70psi being 'normal' during acceleration, but my gauge never did this before the first oil change yesterday.

are you checking the oil after you've been driving it? If so then yes the oil level will go over the cross hairs. Check it when it's dead cold for reference.

If it's into the cross hairs (after checking when dead cold) is that a problem? Should I drain a little out?

no the crosshairs stand for minimal, half, and full. as long as your level is anywhere in the crosshairs, you're good. if its full, it will show above the crosshairs.

Do you know the answer? A,B,C,D,E? I'm thinking "C", but a few posts earlier made it seem like it should be "A".

Engine oil should be checked when the engine is COLD for the most accurate reading. The vehicle should be on a level or nearly level surface.
.....If the oil level is ABOVE the TOP hatches (A) it is OVERFILLED and could cause engine damage. .....If the oil level is within the range of the TOP set of hatch marks (B), it is somewhat overfilled, but probably still safe range. .....The correct range would be anywhere within the C-D-E range. .....If the level is below (E) then the oil level is low, add oil to within the C-D-E range. For a good visual reference of a hot oil level. (Since we are often checking when refueling.) (1) At your first (or next) oil change, drain all the oil, change the filter. (Oil should be changed when the engine is warm/hot to remove the most possible contaminates.) (2) Fill the engine with the correct amount of oil, run the engine for about one -two minutes. (This fills the new filter) Turn off the engine. (3) Check the level on the dipstick, this would be aprox where the warm/hot level should be on the stick.

Although the dipstick (see 1st picture) on the V6 is quite fancy, I do think that the old fashion "flat bar twisted end" (see 2nd picture) is much clearer to read...
The new fancy one drags too much oil up into the dipstick tube and onto the top of the solid part were it meets the wire part. Also I believe I have seen other reports that the V6 takes closer to 5.5 qts then 6. This may have something to do with the engine not having been properly drained but what do I know as I was kicked out of the garage when I wanted to watch...! I would suggest to just have 5.5 qts added and keep a close check and add a little if necessary, is much easier then having to drain some yourself when you don't have a bridge. And YES, the manual could have been written a little clearer... Although I would like to believe BigJoe in post #10, does his C-D-E range comply with the below description??? Until somebody tells me otherwise, I am going against the manual and with BigJoe using the C-D-E range... From the manual: QUOTE When to Add Engine Oil If the oil is below the cross-hatched area at the tip of the dipstick, add at least one liter/quart of the recommended oil. This section explains what kind of oil to use. For engine oil crankcase capacity, see Capacities and Specifications on page 11-2. Notice: Do not add too much oil. If the engine has so much oil that the oil level gets above the cross-hatched area that shows the proper operating range, the engine could be damaged. See Engine Compartment Overview on page 9-6 for the location of the engine oil fill cap. Add enough oil to put the level somewhere in the proper operating range. Push the dipstick all the way back in when through. UNQUOTE Last edited by Dinky Toy; 10-01-2009 at 04:45 PM. |

Sorry to dig up an old post but I always wondered why there wasn't a picture of the dipstick in the manual, especially since there's no "full" or "add" line. I guess Camaro drivers supposed to know all this. The wife got a CTS with the LLT engine last weekend, they're not too proud for pictures. Here's a scan of the Cadillac manual.

I love digging up old posts, my oil is so clean I can't even read where the oil is on that dipstick. Or am I out of oil?

You should be able to see some on there, it will look wet basically. If you cant see any oil at all on the stick something is probably wrong.
