L99 Tune (1st gear at stop -w- tap shift)

This might be old news, but its new to me.

I just wanted to mention my car now drops to 1st gear when it comes to a stop while in tap shift mode (when I'm using the tap shifts to shift the car manually). I had my car tuned for my new converter and now when I come to a stop, the tranmission drops to 1st gear. It can be nice not having to tap down into 1st everytime you come to a stop.

I don't use the tap shift all that often, but it does come in handy from time to time (especially when rolling off the line slowly and you want to hold 1st gear).

A tune can include this feature?

If I'm not mistaken, that is normal operation. If you place your selector in manual mode and do not touch the tap shift, if will always start out in first and return to first when you come to a stop. BUT if you use the tap shift just one time while in manual mode, it will return to 2nd gear when you stop and require that you use the tap shift every time thereafter in order to make the shifts. Whenever you momentarily move the selector to drive and then back to manual, it will again start out in first. In other words, after having used the paddle to shift, you need to return the selector to drive and then back to manual is you want it to start out in first. I have not taken by car out since reading yur post and posting this answer but this is how I believe the tranny is set up. You will probably verify before me because I probably will not remember to try it.

No - I'm talking about while using the tap shifts (manual mode).

In D (Drive) and M (Sport) - modes where the computer does the shifting the computer always starts you out in 1st gear from a stop. But when in M (Manual/tap shift mode) when you're using the tap shifts to change gears, the transmission only drops to 2nd gear at a stop.

Ever since I got my tuned for my converter, my transmission drops to 1st gear when I come to a stop (while using the tap shifts - manual mode).

I'll have to ask my tuner. I've had my car tuned 5 different times. It wasn't until this last tune (2 weeks ago), that I noticed this. I was using the tap shifts and when I came to a stop the tranny dropped to 1st (I was suprised by it). It's pretty cool. As soon as my car comes to a stop, it quickly drops to 1st gear. But if the car continues rolling slowly, it will stay in 2nd. I have to come to a complete stop.

My car dropped to 2nd before and after converter install. I have not had it retuned yet. I will this week and will let you know. It should default to 2nd gear when using taps.

I still haven't talked with my tuner. I actualy forgot about it, because I don't use my tap shifts that often. But my car definately drops to 1st gear when I come to a stop while using the tap shifts. When my tuner tuned my car he must have adjusted something in M (Manual mode) to make it drop to 1st.

Today I used my tap shifts and I really like it this way. Its pretty cool to just pull up to a stop light and have it already in
1st gear. Especially having a higher stall. I definately don't want to start out in 2nd gear with the 3200 stall in the car.

Confirm. In Manual the car will only downshift into M-2. You must manually shift to M-1. I find this irritating as well sometimes, but honestly, if you are just crusing in Manual starting off in M-2 isnt' that much of a deal since you have to shift from M-1 to M-2 fairly soon anyway.... My opinion, only...

Yeah, when you just cruising around (stock converter) its no biggy to start out in 2nd gear. 1st gear is really aggressive and its not needed when you're just cruising around.
But with my 3200 stall, I don't want to start out in 2nd gear. That will just keep me under 3200 rpms for a longer period of time when cruising mellow off the line. I think that's probably why my tuner set my car up to drop to 1st when in manual.

I'll be talking to him soon and I'll ask him.

The V6 models do that, but thats interesting. I'll have to get that tuned in my v8

Sounds cool. I'm having a stall put in with my cam next week in my L99.

Did you notice a big difference in how your car drives after you got the torque converter?

I remembered this thread when I was looking over a tune. In the transmission tune it is programmed to shift into 1st gear when at 0mph in tap/shift mode.
