Question Airbag Recall Reported Jan. 24, 2013

Like the title states, WHO has taken their 2012 Camaro's into their Dealerships to have their Steering Wheel Airbag Terminals replaced? It seems kind of Ironic that either GM, nor my local GM Dealership has even made me aware of this very important and life threatening Recall.

I just downloaded a new App called S.N.A.F.U. onto my Iphone this afternoon and immediately went to my car and scanned my VIN Number into the App and it came back that this Airbag Recall was issued by GM:

Summary: GM is recalling certain model 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Buck Verano and Chevrolet Sonic vehicles. The Driver Side Frontal Airbag has a shorting bar which may immediately contact the airbag terminals under NHTSA Campaign ID NUMBER 13V023000.

Consequence: If the bar and terminals are contacting each other at the time of a crash necessitating deployment of the drivers frontal airbag, that airbag will not deploy, increasing the drivers risk of injury.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil free of charge. The safety recall began on Feb. 13,2013. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300.

Notes: This is GM recall number 12261 and is an expansion of NHTSA recall 12V-522. Owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) , or go to www.safecar.gov.

because that recall only applied to 4,000 vehicles total, Camaro, Verano, Cruze, and Sonic..

so GM will only contact the VIN numbers that fall under that 4,000, not every person with a 2012 car, so if you didn't get notice then your VIN is not on the list.

The app that you talk about lists the recalls for 2012 vehicles, they have no way of knowing if your specific vehicle is on that specific list.

yes I know you punched in your VIN, the app just matches that your vehicle is a 2012 Camaro, not that it is a 2012 Camaro on GM's list..

I would bet $1.00 that if you go to your dealer and they run your VIN theyu will say "does not apply"

and FYI your dealer would never know to contact you about a recall, that comes directly from GM..

Mr. iNCREDIBLE. I kind of figured it had to be simple for GM not contacting me, since this recall is only a couple of months out since it was documented. Thanks for your reply!

My experiences with GM recalls have always been positive.

My 2010 Avalanche had a recall and I was notified within 14 days of the bulletin release date..

Had one on my 2002 Impala also and was notified pretty quick.. don't recall how quick was a long time ago, but I was the second owner on that car and still got the notice.

Thanks, as many of my previous recalls have been very positive, as to why I asked the question here on Camaro5 as to see how many people would actually know about this particular recall and take it from there.

Well, yesterday I was approached by someone who has this same issue with her son's Camaro that I believe is a 2011 model. She asked me if I liked my Camaro (2010 RS) and immediately she followed up with the question, Do you have or had an airbag light problem in your Camaro?

My reply was YESS??? How do you know? My airbag light is on right now. Do you want to see it? She said no, and asked me if I could be contacted by her attorney to work on this issue. I said yes and gave her my contact information. I live in El Paso, TX and it seems to me this airbag system needs to be revised for 2010 year and up models, not just 2012s and 13s... My two cents...

Because she retained an attorney it will be interesting to know if this action can be put under a class action and let GM sort it out...Man I love Chevy and it is disappointing that they are going back to the old ways....

I will try to ask her if she can give me her attorney's contact information and post it here for distribution....

Let me know if you will like that idea....
