In the second pic you can see where the line goes from sharp edge to a rough area just above where it blew out. Coincidence or related?
No Tire expert, but it appears to be defective tire, as the way it's tearing apart from side to side.

Show me where it says they will explode when driven under 40 deg temps. Any ultra high performance tire will say not to use in low temps due to the tire compound not being able to provide the intended grip at those temps until warmed up. Its the same with super sport motorcycle tires, they suggest care when riding in cold weather due to lack of grip.

I was driving my zl1 this weekend with temps around 35 on the interstate and had no probelems, but the lack of traction.

thanks

OK: just read the buliten posted up here http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187045, looks like there might be some merit to that but we do not know if that is when abusing the tire or just driving normally.
