Water marks on the wind shield...

Hi all - spent a good bit of time reading and learning how to wash my car (or at least not ruin it!). Many thanks to all who contribute.

I am having a *terrible* time dealing with water marks on exterior glass. The wind shield might look pretty good from a distance, but on a sunny day at the righ angle - its terrible! And distracting while driving.

Does any one have any tips? Water is quite hard around here making washing a challenge...

I would start off and clay your windshield, if still present then go with a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar. If you still have some spots go in with some 0000 steel wool.

Other options would be using ceriglass by hand or with a DA.

I don't know about the steel wool but I did use the vinegar and water with newspaper. Use the B&W type not the color.

I can not help you with water spots I forgot how I got mine off. I have the same problem. I do this when I wash my car. Just as soon as I wash the roof and windows I will dry the windows. Then I try and keep as much water from hitting the glass. After I wash the hood I dry the windshield and side glass. I do this every time I get the windows wet. It takes alittle longer to wash the car but I do not get the water spots.

Any recommended cleaning solution? I would be pretty nervous with vinegar & water on a brand new car!

Here's what you need, Bar Keepers Friend. Put some a bowl, add a little water until becomes a soupy mixer. Using a mister or Windex spray bottle spray a light coat of water or Windex, apply the Bar Keepers Friend soupy mixer using a clean towel......small area's at a time. Clean with a dry towel, you should be able to find this at Wallmart....if not Amazon has it.

I guess I could have suggested muriatic acid. Seriously vinegar will not do any damage. If you still don't feel comfortable here the use the 0000 steel wool.

Disclaimer: Don't use steel wool to remove water spots on your paint.

Tecca is right on with the 0000 steel wool. It nor vinegar won't hurt your cars windows.

But if you're still worried, just polish it. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound by hand should be able to remove waterspots pretty easily.

I have had really good luck with water and vinegar and it's very safe.

For spot prevention I use Rain-X on the windows year round. It seems to help.

I bought the Nanoskin Autoscrub Wash Mitt to prep the car for waxing but also realized that its great for removing water marks on the OEM stripes and glass.

Just a thought.

Clay bar is a great place to start, although it won't touch really stubborn water spots (neither will any of the clay alternatives).

I have nothing else to offer other than to echo the comments above.

My water spot removal steps go as follows (obviously stopping when something works):

Clay
Vinegar
Steel wool w/ glass cleaner for lube

As with anything, the best offense is a good defense. Wash in the shade if possible (nothing wrong with washing at night, either). Keep the car wet until you're ready to start drying the entire car. You guys know the drill.
