Widening the factory Wheels to 10.5?

After reading all the great threads, I'm going to stay with my Factory 20's, moving to a lowering kit of 1.4 front and 1.0 back with a 315 on the rear. I am thinking of moving the rear wheels to the front, then have the fronts widened to 10.5, (I do not want to run any adaptors) Wouldn't I be able to run a 315 in the back with a 10.5 R wheel? Does anyone know what the offset should be?... or better yet, anyone know a shop in the San Diego area that could do the work and is familiar with the offsets and fitment?? I've looked at some beautiful 22" set ups on the blogs and websites..... but I always come away thinking show car, Not HotRod. It must be the Oldtimer in me... but I think a good amount of rubber between the wheel and the road is a good thing. Hence the desire to stay with 20's, lower the car and put fat tires (to the wells) on it... any guidance is appreciated.

Was thinking about doing the same and bought another set of rears. I found a gentleman who can widen.... Vaughn Machine in Monrovia.

On a side note I wonder if the 245 will fit on the 20x9 until I find the money to have my new rims widened?

Good Luck.

It seems every day someone asks about the widened wheels fitting so they should make it a sticky.

I have had two sets widened one was 10.75" and the other was 11". The later did require and adapter so it would not rub on the inside plastic liner. Take a look at the following threads. It explains it all. If you still have questions PM me or call me at (951) 571-352. I am on the west coast so it is still very early here.

BTW, I have a set of stock fronts I am selling that can be widened but they would need adapters. I have mad a couple widened already. Vaughn does a great job.

If you widen the front wheels you must use an adapter.

If you widen the rear wheel to 10.75" and use a 305 tire you are good. If you widen to 10.75" and use a 315 you may have to use a 1/4" spacer. When running the 315 at the track with low air pressure(15 psi) we saw a little rubbing on the inner plastic on one side(think it was the passenger side). If you widen to 11" you will need a spacer for 305 or 315 tires.

THANK YOU SRT10KLLR! This is great information! l also had found Vaughn's website but haven't contacted him yet. Can Vaughn supply the spacer's also? If not who makes a quality spacer that can handle 10 second 1/4 mile passes?

Because we are using the 10.75" rear wheels we do not need the spacer. But doing a little "search" I found that the H&R adapter is what others who have widened the fronts are using.

The 11" rears I sent my cousin do need a spacer but he is not in the US so I don't know where or what kind of spacer he used.

Tell Vaughn the guy with the "pumpkin" or Halloween" wheels sent you, lol. He named them that because they are painted IOM and Black, lol.

OK ....here is the question then.....if I widen the rear wheels to 10.75" I can fit 315's on the back with no spacers. Will they stick out or can I lower it alright?

2nd..BUT then if I rotate the back rear rims to the front(to utilize the 275's in front) and then widen the front rims to take 315's THEN I'll need a spacer......CORRECT????

This is what I got so it may not be exactly the same for you as no two cars are identically the same. On the 10.75" wheels with 305 tires their was absolutely no rubbing on the street(I drove it over 1K miles just to get to the track) and no rubbing with low pressure at the track. With the same wheels but with 315's there was no rubbing on the street but we did see some very very slight rubbing on one side after we lowered the tire pressure and ran at the track and back home. So I will say the following:

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes
4. Yes

So if you are going to run the 10.75" wheel on the NT-05R in 315 and plan on lowering the tire pressure for the track I would:

1. Use a 1/4 spacer(the one that does not have lugs on it) just to be 100% sure it will not rub. That is what we ended up doing just to be sure it will not rub. Or

2. Get the wheel in 10.50" instead on the NT-05R in 315 with no spacers and you will have more clearance for dropping the car.

If you are going to run the Nitto NT-555R then you can use the 10.75" with no spacers and no rubbing whatsoever.

I can't say the same for other manufacturer's tires as I have not used any other brand; only Nitto NT-555R in 305 and NT-05R in 315.

For the scenario above...it is assuming I widen the rear rims ....correct?
AND thanks for taking the time to answer all the noob questions brother!

Yes, everything in my post was referring to widening the rear wheel except for answer #4(your 2nd) because you asked specifically about a widened front wheel.

Also, widening the wheels add to the inside(backspace) so it does not make the wheel stick out any farther then stock. But to run a 11" wheel you have to use a spacer so it doesn't rub on the inside which then sticks the wheel out as much as the thickness of the spacer you use. I think up to 1/2" spacer will still not stick out past the fender but it depends on the tires used and the amount you widen the wheel.

What are your plans? Are you looking for some nice 315's for the street or are you looking to get some drag radials for the track? The reason I ask is others have posted that the 315 from Nitto is not as wide as other brands. I don't know if that is true or not as I have never measured though.

I want as wide as I can go with the rear wheels for street. But it will definatley see the strip! I'm not worried about Drag radials tho....there are several guys running low 10's with 10+" drag radials!

Are you running your SS? What times and traps?
