Canned vs dyno tune?

Wrong term in title... Meant remote tune vs Dyno tune.

Just scheduled a Dyno tune day. I have an X4 but have not used it yet. Seeing great posts about Dyno Steve's tunes he can just send out for me to dump in with my X4.

Costs aside as I don't mind paying for a Dyno tune of that's going to net the best results.

Which way is best to go with and why? Is there enough difference to warrant the cost difference between custom remote vs Dyno tune?

I picked a handheld and Custom tune because of the reviews on the tuner and my location. Plus the fact that the logs are done in REAL world conditions instead of rollers!! And I do believe that the computer needs time to adjust to the changes instead of just setting parameters and off you go!! Price was better and any changes done to my car were free of charge for the first year! And the best customer service I've EVER had!!

You are asking about canned and dyno tunes, but you are forgetting the 3rd option, and that is a custom remote tune.

Huge misconception on here at times. A canned tuned is NOT the same as a custom remote tune.

True... I don't like the canned tunes from a handheld!! Maybe for a sarong point if you plan on changing your own parameters!

Ok, so wrong term used. So imagine I said remote custom vs Dyno tune. Which way should I go? Costs aside. Mods are CAI, Bo White PTB, Pfadt Tri-Y with HF cats

Until you do more mods ( cam, or turbo or supercharger ) there MIGHT not be much difference depending on the custom tune or the operator . IMHO EFI live and a great tuner who knows what he is doing is the way to go .

What mods do you have? Steve sent me a tune for my LTH/HFC install that had the car running noticably better. He did say that he would even be confident doing it for a cam install, but would not recommend or do a remote tune for any FI install. I was happy with his results, and I've used dyno tunes in the past. I figured, for me and the plans I have for this car, it worked. Now I can get free tunes from Steve if I buy my mod parts from him. Sounds like a deal to me.

Talk to him. He's more than happy to answer any questions you have. He convinced me that for minor mods like LTH's and HFC's, the remote tune is very nearly as efficient as a dyno tune.

Time to datalog. No need for wideband O2, with simple bolt-ons.

If you don't plan to do cam anytime soon, time to put the icing on the cake, and datalog with the X4 you got(this IS why you bought it right???) using the narrow band oem O2. Trust me, you will notice a difference if the tuner knows his sh••.

I used Ted@Jennetty, only because common sense dictates, that after a few hundred or even thousands of tuned Gen5's, you pretty much get a general idea of what is going on.

Ted even found through my datalog to him, KR (knock retard) @ 5000+ rpm, and a slight lean condition.

Troubleshooting was nailed on two fronts! Slightly stale 94AKI gas, AND a bad TB to CAI connection.

So yeah, do yourself a huge favour, do a datalog FIRST, send it to a tuner of choice, (I recommend Ted), and the rest is gravy.

If he doesn't have the space, proper road, etc to datalog, of course, no point breaking the law, or your neck, for the sake of on-road datalogging. Then, dyno is his only option.

I've hardly ever Dyno tuned in my entire life, and I've been modding cars longer than the age of some on here. From FI, etc, I have NEVER in 2.5 decades, blown an engine, or even a head gasket for that matter . On-road tuning for me is where it's at.

Of course, I've always had the luxury of having access to a closed road out at my bros place in the sticks. Very significant that of course.

In any case, for simple bolt-ons minus a cam, he will only need 1st-2nd-maybe 3rd gear tops for a proper datalog to make sure no KR at or near redline.

With FI and/or a LARGE cam, he will need a wideband O2.

Absolutely nothing wrong with your preference. In fact, it is the most anal and crème de la crème way to go. No one can refute "The Dyno".

It's your money.
