window tint questions...

okay, i've mentioned before that i don't know much about window tinting... up until i found this site i didn't even know it was based on %'s LOL!

i found this info for the indiana tinting laws, and was hoping someone could explain it to me. is this dark? or not really? and when someone on here says they did 20% does that mean that only 20% of light is being let in or 80%?

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN INDIANA?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Indiana, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in when using the film.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 30% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 30% of light in.
Rear Window Must allow more than 30% of light in.

This might help you understand the percentages a bit better. 30% isn't really all that dark but it will look and perform better than having no tint. The lower the %, the less light that gets through.

If the law is 30%, then you probably want to tell your installer to use 35% tint to keep it legal. The factory windows are already tinted at 70% so if you installed 30% tint on top of that, you'd be in the mid to upper 20% range overall.

I guess I should have put up the disclaimer that every tint film is different and will vary from the image I posted. It will also look different on different cars, depending on the interior color, available lighting, and percentage light transmission through the factory glass. You will notice that film manufacturers are a bit loose when it comes to naming their film percentage and what percentage of visible light is actually transmitted. For example, take a look at the CS 20 photo and you'll notice that the film actually has a visible light transmission of 16% but the CS 35 has a VLT of 38%.

Here's some other examples:

My 20% looks just like that ...... Don't forget the picture is outside looking in ..... Doesn't look as dark from the inside ....IMO anything less than 20% gets hard to see at night ...

30 % will look pretty good. My car is 15% and everyone thinks its pretty dark. 30 will be a good all around tint, and chances are police wont mess with you. The tint law here is 27 I think and my windows on my other camaro are 5% and Ive never gotten pulled.

There's a way to make the window go back up once you open the door, cant remember how but the place that tinted mine did it just fine. I think it has something to do with locking the door once you open it.
