Oh wait. You must go to a TRACK to run 120mph trap speeds?

Odd. Perhaps they should also have road tracks and AutoX courses instead of just dragstrips so you can go around corners fast!

They do????

To get brutally honest, running a low 9 second ET in an automatic car is pretty tame. Running a moderate lap time at your local track is a bit more effort and far more of a rush.

People who downplay the twisties simply either haven't tried it, or never pushed it.

And next time you see somebody hit the wall in a 12 second car, you can usually blame their lack of seat time in the twisties. You learn real fast how to recover from a slide.

I'm not downplaying dragracing. Lord knows I've got several pounds of timeslips from all over the USA in cars, bikes, and trucks.

It's a bigger rush running a Volt around an AutoX course, than running a low 9 second SuperGas Firebird down the strip.
Well said! Both the wife and I run the Challenger at the 1/4, road course, and standing mile. We also run our Fiat 500 Abarth at the road course. The road course is just on another level! After that the Mile is exhilarating as hell.

I think the allure of the 1320 is it's got more accessible metrics. As every road course is different, I can't go and post my lap time at NMSP as it means nothing to the rest of the world. Even the mile is hard to compare fairly as conditions at the top are so impactful. I see a lot of guys respond to mile speeds like "no big deal - I've had my car at 170!" They have no clue. Just like the guys that are at 12.5 and are sure they are just a good shift away from 10's!

Not to mention cost....I need a helmet and $20 to drag my car all night. What does a day at the road course cost? Safety equipment costs?

Drag racing is cheap until you want to win.

Then things change.

The only form of racing that is cheap is being a spectator, and that is not an option for many of us.

But, look up SCCA Solo2 racing in your area. Give it a try. You need a helmet, and for the stock classes, no modifications are permitted except tires. Top speeds are capped by the course design to about 65mph.

It is 60 seconds of shear violence. No kidding. You have to remember to breath. Our area is 4 laps per event, and $30 to enter. That is 240 seconds of hard driving. If you are running 12 second ET's, that's 20 passes worth.

I'm well beyond the no modifications stage and Autocross has never appealed to me. I would no doubt have a blast on a road course , but it is cost prohibitive which is unfortunate.

There are AutoX classes that permit modifications. They still don't require a cage, fire system, SFI 38.1 device, nets, etc. But neither do "open track" days at your local RR track. All that safety gear is for competition events, and even the licensing (you must attend a school) can set you back thousands.

You'd have to try AutoX to understand. It's pretty intense, but you won't hurt your car other than cone hickeys. The same cannot be said for RR tracking. You can total your car pretty easy. More people wreck their cars at the dragstrip than AutoX by a huge factor. Probably 100:1.

There are several HPDE (high performance driving experience) events coming up in my area (3 Milwaukee Mile, 1 Road America). They describe them as a good place to gain track experience before progressing SCCA Solo. Next one is Aug 21 so I think I'll check it out.

Bunch of axx holes they are. Told me the wanted 5k over and there was another dealer that was selling for 10 over. Manager told me that's how they try to make money and the salesperson told me they have to try. I wonder if I call back if they will tell me msrp or try to get more

Problem is they left such a bad impression i think I'll just go elsewhere.

I can't support anyone who engages in gouging. Just not right. Plus it's suppose to be illegal here to charge over MSRP

Some places will try and make extra because of the hype, but like I said I would not pay the extra. Brampton is not selling above MSRP or Georgetown I would think.

Well, I stopped by my friendly Dodge dealer Thursday, asking about the 392 Scat Pack Shaker. Salesman told me, while shaking his head the whole time, that a guy walked in this week, plopped down 20 large, just for the "privilege" to get their first HellCat, at MSRP.

That'll be about $89,000 out the door.

I talked with a different salesman at a different dealer, he didn't say how much TWO guys have put down on HellCats, even with the dealer telling them they didn't even know if they would get any allocations!
