they are 100% worth it. Anybody who says otherwise has either never used one or is an idiot. if you are driving down the highway and a cop has his radar on, you know the cop is there long before you can see him. (over a mile alot of times).

I drove from CO to IA the only time I was under 90 was in traffic or cities. never once did I come close to a cop getting me. If you use your eyes and a detector you are pretty much set.

In the middle of a 4000 mile trip, bought a escort red line before the trip for my own test. I'm staying within 5 over and I'd say 50/50 caught or not. Not a believer.

So you're saying that the radar detector has detected radar (probably every time), but you are "not a believer"?

They are not "police detectors", they are radar detectors. No radar, no alert.

They are just an additional tool for the job of not getting pulled over.

That's like having a set of combination wrenches, but you never seem to need the 13mm, so you're "not a believer" in sets of wrenches.

The radar detector is like having gauges or idiot lights for your car. It's possible you will go many years without ever needing them, but every once in a while, they let you know about a potential problem before it gets expensive.

I've gone 38 years without needing one, not buying one now... Not needed!

Exactly. Rest of the time, just practice self control.

"Nasty"?

When I was younger, I drove 10 over and watched constantly. Now I drive 5 and relax. Not even close to being stopped now. There's always some hothead eager to get my ticket instead.

The speed limits are set for below average drivers. If not then 50 % of the drivers cannot handle the speed. Going slightly over the speed limit does not make you unsafe if you are average or above driver. Going crazy speeds - take it to a track as there are below average drivers on the road. A radar detector is just a tool - you know it detects other things also like road work, etc. A radar detector is not a waste of money if you use it in the proper way.

The problem lies in most people think they are above average when they are far from it... Unfortunately those are usually the ones that love to drive too fast for conditions....

I'd say it is needed.

I just got hit with 95 mph in a 65 mph, and careless.

Cop was a dick, stated I was racing a Toyota Corolla with Alaska plates AND that I knew the guy. (I'm in Jersey, and clearly was not and didn't even know this random guy)

Any recommendations on one?

Cop's perception is his perception- that doesn't make him a dick. 95 in a 65 shows who the dick is.

Who makes the determination as to who is an average or above driver? Do you think bad driver's think they are bad driver's?

Speeding is a choice, I suppose. In 40 years of driving I've not had any tickets BECAUSE I am an above average driver. You see, a good driver knows the rules and runs by them. I'm glad I do also, because otherwise I would not be able to afford insurance on my 11 performance cars that I have right now.

3 year old thread resurrected from the bottom ... Fact is they work, provide people a piece of mind for the time that they are running 10 minutes late. $400-700 units are on backorder for a reason. And there are A LOT of agencies still using older speed sensing technology. I know for a fact aside from the State Police in my area; surrounding Sherriff and local PDs do NOT have laser in their cars. The one's that do are dedicated VMT cars and you're talking 1-2 cars for the entire force.

I'm just saying about 50 percent of the time it would have been too late by the time I got the warning. I still enjoyed having it and it did detect some cameras
