Grinding gears?!?!?!
Anyone ever hear grinding noise coming from the trans or clutch while backing up?
It has happened to me 4 times now over the 4 months I have had it, each time at the same distance down the driveway. The first time I thought I ran a pine cone over...no pine cone. Second time I new it was metal grinding, the last 2 times were real loud. I can not reproduce it at the dealer (of course)......... so just wondering about the other z/28's out there |

not yet...silent so far. An occasional pop from the rear on a tight turn from a dead stop.

This gearbox can be extremely notchy and balky when breaking in. Mine refused to execute the 4-3 downshift at anything over 3K rpm on the downshift -- which is extremely frustrating during lapping sessions.
I solved that with Amsoil for the gearbox (though Redline also makes a great product that helps this). Took the car out after the change, and practiced the 4-3 downshift over and over to help "train" the gearbox and get things to mesh. On my next track day it improved by 90+%...

Synthetic oil in the trans along with a seperate clutch oil reservoir is a great investment to protect your trans in the long run..Do it before its too late.

IIRC, the transmission and diff, are connected via the cooling lines. So If I change the diff fluid, should I not also be changing the trans fluid at the same time?

Going with a separate clutch reservoir has been debated here. Directly about the increased heat dissipation of more fluid vs less fluid. I plan to keep it stock, unless some issue causes me to reevaluate this setup.

Had 1st gear/syncro go in my trans after my 2nd track day. Dealer replacing under warranty w/o push back. Strange gear to go since it's not used at the track and I don't hard launch the car, proper break in, etc. Perhaps a fluke issue.
