Thumbs up DIY Transmission Fluid change V6

Ok so I changed out my trans fluid today in my LS with a M6 and I must say its pretty easy, first I went to the dealer and they looked at me crazy because I was wanting my fluids changed and there is only 1500 miles on the car, then he was like alright we can do it but its going to be $140, I kindly told them to screw themselves, so I took it to my buddy who owns a garage and we did it. Now since I have done it I find that its easier to shift through the gates and its a smoother transfer between gears, plus im glad I kinda did it because the V6 requires 1.9 qts and I'm pretty sure I barely got a 1 QT out of it (someone at GM messed up). So if your having problem with stiff shifting try changing out your oil and see if its any better.

Now as far as fluid the V6 uses: 75W-90 Gear oil and it holds 1.9 QTS.
V8 uses: transmisson fluid and it holds 3.65 QTS

The first pic shows the drain plug. Its directly under the transmisson and mine was marked with a green mark on it.

The second pic is the fill plug. Its about half way up and a little behind the drain plug on the drivers side of the tranny.

Hope this helps out my fellow C5 members with the V6

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks! Now after you locate those two things, what do you do from there? Can you please provide some instructions from start to finish? I'm new to this lol..

Take out the fill plug and then take out the drain plug that way the air can flow through it and get the fluid out. After its completely drained put the drain plug back in place then take the fluid along with either a pump or a about a 4 foot tubing that you can run down through the engine compartment and being filling, once its full you with know because the fill plug will begin overflowing. It should take aprox. 1.9 QTS

The Aisin AY6 transmission (V6 manual) fluid capacity is 1.8 liters/1.9 quarts but the Tremec 6L80 transmission (V8 manual) is 3.9 liters/4.2 quarts. The quarts measurements are rounded values when converting from liters.

Does the car have to be on during fill up?

Two questions:

1) Is it a good idea to warm up the engine/transmission before changing it?

2) How would ramps affect draining or filling? Would ramps help it drain easier, but then off ramps for filling?

Thanks much

car must remain horizontal for the tranny to be filled correctly.
warm fluid does flow better but it may be too hot to handle. best to do it cool and just give it time to drain.

No, only automatic transmissions need the engine running during fill.

Nice! Thanks!

So if the car has to be completely horizontal the only way to change it would be if the car was on a lift? Bummer.

you can set the front on ramps or jack stands, then lift the back and place the jack stands under it. just mak sure it is level, then get under it and change the fluid.
