Well, if he's being asked to replace a whole front bumper despite having only damaged the chrome beyond a doubt, that's different. The other guy wouldn't be the first one to play the system to replace much more than just the damaged part.

My question is, if he was that close, why back up to begin with? Speaking for myself, I don't chance it - if the guy looks that close, I get out, check the spacing, then if I REALLY need those extra two inches I'll find a point of reference outside the car and back up a couple inches along that reference. But with how limited the rear visibility is with this car, I'll never just guess.

1. Stop shouting.

2. Stop blaming the other guy because you hit his car. Man up and take responsibility.

3. I would welcome the cops coming to fill out a report. They will be able to clearly establish how much damage you did, and how much was already there. In fact, I'd call them myself since the guy is trying to pin previous damage on you.

4. Your deductible only applies to a claim on your own vehicle. Your insurance will pay 100% of whatever it costs to fix his car. They will probably raise your rate however.

You ran into the guy, part of driving is watching out for morons, obviously he get's too close to other cars, but you are supposed to look behind you before you back up, if you were able to read his vin number you should have moved forward instead.

Sure, it's not cool to pull up real close anywhere, but gas stations can get crowded. If you knew he was there, and that close to you, why did you even put the car in reverse? Looks like some notable damage to his car, I'd be pissed too.
