Cat Legalities?
I live here in NY. If I remove the existing cats and replace them with high flows, will I be able to get an approved inspection?

From what I understand it is illegal to replace the cats unless the old ones are bad.

The high flow cats will probably pass the emissions test. In Ca the inspector does a visual test and if they notice that they are replaced cats they can fail it unless you can prove the original cats were bad. I'm not sure if NY does a visual...

"legally", no, it's NOT legal to swap your cats to hi-flow versions.
That being said...how are inspections done in your county??? Do they just plug in your computer? If so, as long as your check engine light isn't on...your fine. (some counties have a tailpipe sensor to measure emissions, which you'd probably still pass anyway). They are supposed to do a visual check to make sure all the equipment is in place...I've NEVER seen them check, and if they did, as long as they see cats there...you have no worries. The biggest issue is that your CEL isn't on.

I do not know about NY, but in GA you do not have to get emmisions tested untill the car is about 5 years old. I have heard several say they will just enjoy their hi flow cats untill 2015 rolls around and then worry about it.
