Rear Differential fluid Mobil 1 or Royal Purple, and motor oil discussion.
I have an SS L99 A6.
I went to the local autoparts store to look for my mobil 1 75w-90w gear oil for my differential. Well I didn't find the exact gear oil but I can across royal purple. I remembered someone mentioned it here on camaro5. What are you guy/gals using for your differential lube? Give me you opinions and why? What am I looking for on the bottle? Same for the motor oil. I went to get my 8 quarts of 5w30 and got confused. If I get mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 am I covered or am I supposed to look for something else on the bottle??

I went with Mobil 1 (Synthetic motor oil) since Costco has great price by the case.
I put Royal Purple in the tranny and rear diff. I really believe both products are top quality. I did notice smoother shifting when I changed the rear diff. Bottom line on both topics ,,change the oils..!!! Hope this helps. |

Rear Differential fluid Mobil 1 or Royal Purple, and motor oil discussion.

I got the motor oil changed at about 420 miles @ the dealer, and now I I'm approaching 1500 and I want to do the Diff for the first time and Motor oil again, but don't want to pay the dealer $140 for a $7 quart of r-end oil. The $70 @ the dealer for the oil change wasn't bad.

Mobil 1 synthetic in engine, Mobil 1 synthetic Dex III in transmission, Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 LS in differential.

Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 LS

So if it says "synthetic 75w-90 LS" specically the "LS" then I'm good? I realize "LS" means limited slip, but nowhere else on the bottle does it say anthing about Limited Slip. Will I need an additive with the "Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 LS" ???

No, Go check the MobileOil websight. No need for additional LS additives.

Oils & Lubes
I went to one dealer and what they put in is 75w-90 synthetic (of there own kind) and their service manual says add 2.6oz of GM LS additive. It states on the 4oz LS additive bottle to make sure you put in the right amount. (or else!)
I checked the mobil website and didn't find the info on the gear lube not needing the LS additive. But I stumbled upon the engine oil and have an addition questions. Which leads to a side question, does royal purple have the right proportion? Speaking of royal purple, are thier products better than mobil 1, and does it really matter? I never heard of them until I bought the camaro. Do we use the standard Mobil 1 5W-30 or the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-30? Does it matter? both are good? and one is just better?? can I mix match if one is not available??

I changed the oil at 500 miles and drained the old oil through a coffee filter and WOW, I couldn't believe all the metal shavings. I put in Royal Purple 5W30 performance oil. I changed the diff at the same time and did the same procedure (filter through coffee filter) and got the same results. I replaced the diff fluid with Royal Purple 70W90 and the Royal Purple has the additive to it so no extra was needed. Recently I changed the M6 fluid with Royal Purple Synchromax and what a difference. Between all, the car shifts smoother/easier/better. I am very happy with Royal Purple vs Mobil 1, but I think they are equally superior to any other products out there. I paid roughly $160.00 for Royal Purple Motor oil, filter, Diff fluid and the M-6 fluid and it took approx. 2 hours to complete.

Differential capacity for the L99 V-8 A6 Camaro
Quote:
Even if I bought all the stuff at the dealers rediculous prices of $28 for a $10 bottle of synthetic 75w-90 gear oil and and the $10 dealer additive that would be a total of $38 plus tax. I pointed this out to my dealer because they wanted $140. I told them that I could buy all the stuff at the autoparts store and it takes ten minutes to drain and fill the thing so they lowered the price to $28 for the fluid and $44 in labor. That's half the price. Which is still rediculous but I want to have the service records in their computer, and that is the only reason I would pay this.

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid. At. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/..._75W-90LS.aspx |

I'm heading out to my first road course, so I just did all of this today. I went with Mobil 1 for the motor oil and diff. fluid. Didn't specify the tranny fluid, but I always tell them to use the best stuff. It was a little pricey at the dealer, but my dealer has been great ($190 for the diff, $160 for the tranny and $50 for the oil.) Dealer actually tried to talk me out of it. They said that the tranny an diff didn't need to be changed until 30,000 miles.

DREAMER2430, trust me when I say it should be done before 30,000 miles. I drained all of my fluids through a coffee filter (diff, trans, oil) and it looks like somebody had a bottle of glitter and poured it in. The metal shavings are substantial and definatley needs to be removed. Plus, after the diff and trans is done it will shift smoother/quieter/easier. Money well spent!!!!
