Factory polished rims & break dust
I have searched forum for an hour before posting this question. Does anyone know of product, or how to clean polished factory wheels, or any wheels, that might help to reduce brake dust buildup?
I have a 2011 2LT (non RS) with 19-inch polished factory rims. Because I don't have SS brakes I don't have a major issue with dreaded black dust. However, I have a good friend with a new Audi A7 with factory polished rims and one day after washing the amount of black brake dust on his wheels is a mess. Thought if I could find a wheel cleaning product that helps repel brake dust sticking to his wheels I would use the same product for my Camaro wheels. I know we have different cars and different brakes. Perhaps there is no product that helps repel brake dust build up but that is why I am asking the question. We both wash our cars weekly but today I saw how much brake black stuff was on his wheels only 24 hours after he washed them I was shocked. Thanks if you have suggestions and please feel free to PM me. |

The only thing you can really do is put a sealant on your wheels. That will help the dust wash off more easily.
You may also want to use a waterless wash to quickly wipe down the wheels when you finish driving it. If you want, change to ceramic brake pads. They dust far less and the dust color is much less noticeable. --When was the last time you read the Constitution?--

Chemical Guys...
I have a 1 LT and I am trying Chemical Guys Wheel Guard. I've had it for a few weeks, but it's been to hot to put it on. Finally, I put some on in the garage last night. It's basically like a paste sealant. Drove to work and back today, and not brake dust buildup yet. I'm going to monitor it throughout the week. I ordered it when I ordered my Chemical Guys Honeydew Sno Foam Car wash. You can find it here:

I guess the question is how much are clean wheels worth to you, in-between washing?
My SS creates a lot of dust buildup on the wheels. But, I wash it and the wheels often. I spray Simple Green on the wheels when they're wet, and follow up with my soapy wash mitt (I keep two...one for the body, the other for the wheels). I weave the mitt between the spokes and catch the inner wheel, takes maybe 1 minute per wheel and I catch the face of the tire as well. The soap and Simple Green make for an excellent, frothy and slick solution that really cleans. Hose off. Everyone has their method and madness...that one is mine. I used to seal/wax the wheels on my other Camaros...long time ago when I still had enough free time to care about that stuff. It's mildly useful, but breaks down with any amount of driving. It takes time, and additional 'product'...it basically makes them easier to clean, which, if you're doing anyway with the right 'product', shouldn't be hard at all.

Again, thanks for all the input. Nothing is going to stop break dust, and many products to clean break dust. I was only wondering if there was a product that helped repel brake dust sticking to our wheels. Lots of products to clean wheel break dust, looking to know if anyone found a wheel cleaning product that helps break dust from sticking to our wheels.
Shocked when a friend showed be the amount of black break dust on is new Audi A7 that he had washed the day before. He washed and cleaned wheels the day before, 24 hours later he took a napkin and ran it between wheel spokes, massive black break dust. Thought if there was a product to clean wheels, and helped repel break dust sticking to our Camaro wheels, that would be helpful. Lots of good products to clean wheel brake dust, I was asking if anyone knew of a wheel cleaning product that helped repel break dust, reduce amount of break dust sticking to our wheels. Perhaps this product does not exist. |

I couldn't stand the brake dust on my SS polished wheels- In 5-10 miles the fronts looked dirty even when heavily waxed.
Finally dumped them for a set of GM factory chrome wheels. The dust doesn't stick to chrome.
