"Freight" cost
Why was I charged 1,450.00 for them to drive my car from GM factory to OMS? that's like 5km's. I offered to pick the car up at the factory, but no-go. they said that I could pick it up from the factory, but I would still pay freight... advantages to living near factry = pictures.

That's pretty bad there :( They really should work with people that live that close... If I remember right, I want to say I was charged $850 for the destination charge on the sticker, but I haven't looked at it in quite some time.. I've got the window sticker in the glove box.

I'm sure it has something to do with the unions---charging everyone freight no matter how far or close.

The reason you are paying it is because it is a FLAT FEE. They have to account for the cars being delivered to Miami, San Diego, etc.. It costs more to transport a car way down here than to say Michigan but, it would be a nightmare to have a different fee for each new car depending on where it was being shipped and dealers would balk big time as customers might shop where the fees are lowest and drive the car home or whatever. so it's a flat fee for each car no matter where it goes.

yeah, imagine how much my freight fee would be...it'd be enough to make me reconsider buying it now. i'd just wait a few more years til i transfer again

The flat fee makes sense, but you should be able to pick up your car at the factory without paying freight. That sucks for you.

Its not really freight anyway, it's just the cost of the car. It's a flat TAX that everyone who buys a new Camaro pays to GM. Getting a better deal is between you and your dealer.
The dealer didn't say "whoops, here's this extra charge we didn't notice" Did they? If so, I'd tell them to pound sand. "You might say I went right up to the factory And picked it up, it's cheaper that way"-Johnny Cash

And picking up your car at the factory would mean, someone there to have to sign you in and out, then you have safety inspections on the vehicle and so on and so on. Then they would charge a "pick up" fee and people would complain about that....

A pickup fee sounds reasonable, as long as it's not as high as that freight charge.

When I walked into the dealer I told them I am not paying a destination charge. End of story, didnt have to pay it. And I ordered my car.
