Sales Tax?

im looking at having a friend purchase an SS for me to export to uk, now going by the web price of around $34,500ish

is this the price paid? does it include sales tax or is this added after the sale?

i was hoping to avoid this but i cant find a dealer thats willing to sell to myself :(

Short answer: No, that does not include sales tax.

I varies, wildly, from state to state. The state of Virgina's sales tax on a new car is ~3% whereas the state of Washington's is upwards of 9% (if not 9%).

is this added to the cost of the car so charged by the dealership

or do you pay the state/government at a later date

Sales tax must be paid at the time of purchase; basically consider it an added amount to the listed price of the vehicle.

If your car's MSRP is $32,000 and sales tax is 3%, then you'd be paying $32,960 (or financing it / etc) before driving off the lot

Hope this helps!

EDIT: You pay the sales tax to the dealer. The dealer handles getting that over to the government themselves.

I read the other thread about the Camaro being available in Dubai. Not sure which would be more of a hassle for you to purchase from, though.

Actually, depending on the county in WA, its could be 9.8%.

I'm not familiar with international orders, but my father in law buys used cars here in the states and ships them to the UK. He pays an import tax, plus UK sales tax on the purchase, but he doesn't pay local tax here in the states.

Same goes for out of state purchases. If you buy your car in VA, with a 3% tax, you actually pay your local tax, which for me is 9.75% in WA.

To the OP, better check to make sure you can actually import it into the UK, and how much that is going to cost you. For instance, my father in law imports into Portsmouth rather than Ipswich, because the import tax is slightly less.

another question for you guys

when my friend purchases the car, can they not register it ( sry if this is the incorrect term ) as if they were going to be taking it to another state, therefore would not pay the sales tax untill they registered the car in that state?

but obviously the car would not be registered in that state as i would be shipping it to the UK
