exhaust backfire
I tried a thread search, no help. I have had a low exhaust backfire in the lower gears after letting up off the gas, it sounds great, but is it normal.

Yup. It sounds kind of cool when you down-shift going down a hill

It's normal. Decel Enleanment. Saves fuel.

You should hear it with cut-outs!

A louder, more open (freely flowing) exhaust will amplify it.
It's not technically a backfire, as a backfire is indicative of exhaust gases or unburned fuel exploding in the tailpipe. What you're hearing is the pressure equalizing in the exhaust. Someone mentioned that the fuel shuts off when the car is coasting (foot off gas) which is true. The cooler atmosphere outside the exhaust will equalize with the hotter atmosphere inside the exhaust (mufflers and resonators) and cause the pop - often many times in succession while decelerating. This is typical of free-er flowing exhausts like our Camaros have. On a restrictive exhaust system, you'll barely hear it, if at all. |

I mainly hear it in second gear while slowing down. Sounds lovely!

It can be tuned out. I have LT's and a catback, and in the tuning had the Decel Enleanment turned off. Not a single backfire since. Lost maybe 1 or 2 mpgs, but worth it to not sound like Uncle Buck backfiring on every decel.

Sorry but there's NO WAY I would pay to get rid of this sound, I would acutually pay to may it louder. It's retro and AWSOME I just love it.

Well the famous saying to each his own, But I have hi-flow cats with cutouts
on my ss and the popping with open is sometimes crazy loud, I love it. Especially when in a tunnel.
