Engine lugging in the Camaro

I've been thinking about this for a few days and thought I'd bring it up and see what you guys have to say about it. So simply put, does the 1 to 4 skip-shift cause the engine to lug? If it does then isn't bad for the engine? I know one can easily avoid the skip-shift but why does the Camaro have this if it's bad for the engine? I did search the forum but could not find a clear answer, if this has already been answered then I apologize and please can someone point me to that thread.

Yes skip shift can make the engine lug, and it's not great for the engine, especially during break in.

They did it for the fuel economy.

Sometimes my engine lugs , sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the speed and whether or not I'm about to go up an incline.

A lot of the time if I find myself shifting, I'll quickly go to forth, and then shift to third.

I have also read that EFI engines don't lug so in the case of the Camaro 1-4 shift will not lug the engine. Any opinions?

Yes, EFI engines do lug. If you don't believe me just shift to 6th at 40 mph
and hit the gas. Then you can tell me, Did you lug the engine?

If it were a diesel, you would have put out a black smokescreen so thick traffic would have to stop for 10 minutes!!

The only time the skip shift engages for me is around 15 mph shifted once to 4th to see what it would do.....yeh since then its only because im not paying attention and slip into it. Now i just gun it through first to avoid it.

Yep, lugs for me. When I get locked out I shift to 4th then straight to 3rd. It's a little annoying but only happens when behind a slow poke.

Lots of answers in the General Discussion forum. As mentioned the "skip-shift" feature allows GM to meet certain government fuel consumption requirements. If the system operates it means you are just puttering around and no you won't be lugging the car in this situation. It will easily pull away using only part throttle in fourth. If you need more acceleration, shift down. You have enough torque, unlike the imports which need to keep their RPMs higher due to their narrow power band. If the program bothers anyone, there is a cheap ($20) fix available to circumvent the skip-shift feature. No problems either way way you wish to go.

Cheers.
