Depends on a lot of factors.

I got the call tonight. I will have a 3.90 in my hands Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I have a spare diff assembly that we will install the gears.

once again robin, you are the man. now get working on some 4.10's, 4.30's and 4.56's lol

It's not me......LOL, It's my guys at Motive Gear. Now really any gear company can tool up to produce the gears if they want to make the commitment.

I have heard stories about gear sets for the G8 going for $1500.00. Now maybe that is the asking price I don't know how many are selling at that price.

Motive should have the 3.90 available in about 3 months. They are working on the 4.10 but that will come after the 3.90.

There may be other gear cutters developing there own gear sets.

What close up are you looking for?

Maybe I can get something.

Doesn't the G8 have the same rear in it as the new camaro? If so the G8 GXP M6 comes with a 3.70 rear, although that is probably not enough of a difference to really be a worthwhile swap.

You are right that it will not suffer much on the highway with a change in gears, but I don't think it will really be a great performance boost. Now on the M6 car, I think a gear swap will be very worthwhile. Think about it, you are running up against the rev limiter on that car at the track, and will probably have to shift into 4th right at the end of the 1/4 if you add any power.

If I had the automatic car I think the best money would be spent doing the exhaust first, Long tube headers, etc., then the next step would be to get rid of the AFM cam and lifters, and put a decent cam in there. This should get you to 475 crank hp without much trouble, and you could move the rev limiter up to at least the 6600 limit of the LS3. Hell, our 01 z28 auto had a 2.73 rear and only used 2 gears through the 1/4 mile-now that car needed some gears!

And BTW, the plastic front end was a preproduction part, the issue was addressed on all consumer cars. Feel free to do 155 on your daily commute.

Actually the first thing that should be done is go up on the stock stall on the converters. Most automatics do much better with a little bit more stall. Gearing would help alot to. You could get off the line much better with the stall and gears. The 4th gens autos benifited greatly in times with just these two mods. I think we would see the same thing here as well. Then with the other mods you listed, but keep the AFM and use one of the VVT/AFM cams the A6 would be a real beast and keep great mpg.

your kidding right going from 3.45 to 3.73 is nothing to gas mileage with 6 gears

at 70mph your only turning about 1900 rpms

hell with 4.56 gears at 60mph your at 1900 rpms

Good Point! Something would just make me want to get rid of the AFM and bump the rev limiter though to where it belongs.

Why would you want to bump the rev limiter? What kind of torque are you hitting after 6600? I believe it starts to drop quite a bit, but we won't know until someone removes it.

The L99 has a rev limiter set at 6000, in my previous post I said swapping out the cam/lifters would be a nice performance boost, and would allow you to bump the rev limiter up to 6600 like in the LS3.
