installed my catch can this afternoon

I installed the v1 EE catch can today. Install was pretty easy. I fired it up and was more than a little concerned about a hissing noise from the passenger side that sounded like it was coming from under the IM. My first thought was "shit, the RTV I used to install my iceolator has failed." After poking around for a few minutes, I determined that if I pinch either of the hoses going to the CC, the hissing stops.

I used teflon tape on the can fittings, and made sure the o-ring was properly seated in the can, and that all of the fittings and can bottom is tight. I've looked at other threads where folks say this is normal, and I'm not getting any CELs, so I'm about 98% confident that everything is ok, but I have two problems:
  1. I think the hiss sounds like shit. It *sounds* like something is wrong.
  2. There's this nagging little thought in the back of my mind that perhaps the iceolator is not sealed as well as I thought. I'm tempted to pull the IM, and use a second GM gasket (instead of RTV) to give me piece of mind about the seal.
Am I over-reacting? Also, would using braided hoses reduce the noise?

Did you use the rubber plug to plug where the hose used to go to? I left mine off and had a hissing sound and quickly realized that's what I missed

I'm thinking the noise is a result of the rubber hosing and the fittings to what is left of the OEM tubing. Thinking about upgrading the hoses.

I had the same issue when i had RX CC. Happen to get braided hoses (not to stop the hiss but for looks) and it still hissed. Car ran fine and never really had a issue.

I would trade the RTV for an extra gasket fwiw. Doesn't solve the hiss issue but it does ensure peace of mine that a leak does not develop.

So the drain valve at the bottom of the can is closed, right?

Sorry, don't mean to ask dumb questions. But that would create a hiss.

It's the Elite Engineering can. It doesn't have a drain cock; you just unscrew the bottom half the can to empty it. That being said, the o-ring seal for the can is in place and it is screwed on tightly.

OK- I couldn't remember if the new Elite had a drain as well, but that rules out that idea.

If the hiss stops when you pinch either hose, than the hiss is being generated just by the flow of air thru the can (vacuum is being generated at the IM- if there was a leak at any of the can connections or at the IM, you'd still hear the hiss when you pinched the hose going to the back of the engine).

Often there is a one way check valve in these cans that has been known to create hiss. Perhaps that's the case here.

So, I went after the hissing noise today, redid of all my connections. I took a stethoscope to it and the hissing is definitely coming from the intake hose (not the IM, thankfully). The hiss is happening down the entire length of the hose when I listened with the scope, so I'm guessing it's the sound of the vacuum at the PCV elbow resonating through the hose. That makes me feel better that nothing is "wrong," but I still hate the sound. I emailed the guys at Elite and they told me they are testing braided hoses on another customer's car to see that will reduce the noise and will get back to me. Crossing fingers...

Here's a video of the hissing.

Have you tried cleaning the pcv barb on the passenger valve cover ? Some have done a drill out on this barb and have had whistling. Or i seen one so clogged it also made a vibration sound.

Haven't tried that yet, but that makes sense. Will take a look at that over the next day or so.

Well, I'm going to punt about the hissing and just live with it. I've taken it apart twice and cleaned all of the fittings, did the "soapy water" thing looking for leaks, listened intently with a stethoscope and make sure the PCV barb was not restricted (I didn't drill it out, and don't intend to, either). It is what it is. The can is working well, so I'm gonna quit worrying about it and move on to other things.

Here's what the can has collected in two weeks. The weather has been cold here, so the condensate looks muddy, but the crankcase oil is clean, so I'm not concerned:
