Part of the problem is everyone's obsession with Japanese cars. The media continues to give American auto makers a bad name when in reality our vehicles consistently out-perform Japanese cars in most categories. Heck, GM has more models that get high mpg than ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER IN THE WORLD.

I'm not sure if this guy is stupid or simply ignorant. 35 mpg CAFE will be hard enough and the automakers have already started making plans to meet that goal. Increasing it by another 15 mpg will not happen

We could probably hook a hamster wheel up to a Metro and have the hamster run and it would generate more horsepower than that piece of crap engine...

And regarding this idiot of a senator...as if we aren't having enough problems getting to freaking 35. How the hell do you expect us to hit 50? Is every single one of our cars going to have to be E-Flex equipped?

Actually, the small and secretive Metro Modding community consider this to be the most cost effective performance enhancement you can do.

I kindly contacted this official with a friendly message about how we need to show our pride by supporting our nation's greatest companies and how that number is impossible. I asked that the Senator call me.

Well you probably got more consideration than I did.

I called him an egotistical posturing old guard relic. And I condemned him for using this crisis as an opportunity to get notoriety. And illustrated his ignorance based on his lack of understanding of current and future CAFE requirements.

His office hasn't called me yet.

Secondly, all their security caravans and all that other BS all ride around in heavily armored SUVs that probably get 5mpg.

I can't stand hypocrites.
Hey, at least now they can get Tahoe and Escalade hybrids

But you can't build a metro today. It would never pass the crash tests.

And now that gas is down around $2/gal you would have very few buyers.

Crash test? My friend had an old Metro, and when he bought a newer car, we spent the day trashing it before taking it to the junkyard. I seriously threw a jab at the door panel and dented it big time.

He hasn't called me either. I'm hoping my cordial approach will yield positive results.

On a side note, I was an intern with a lobbyist for a summer, and I'm very good at talking public officials into supporting my interests.
