Window Tint?! HELP!
Okay, I own a 2010 Camaro 1LT RS. I would like to get the windows tinted. I don't really want to go anything less that 30% becuase it is suppose to be 50% legally. But anyway, I looked at the window of my Camaro and it says 70% Transparency STOCK. Does that mean it's already tinted at 70%? Also, if the Windows are already tinted at 70% what percent should I put on to equal 30%-35%. If anyone owns a Red Camaro could you please post pictures of your tint with the % Number? Thanks! P.S. I am still a noob to Camaro5.com so forgive me if this is posted in the wrong spot. |

The factory glass allows 70% of the light to enter.........................it does not block 70% of the light from entering....it actually blocks out 30%. The misnomer is that you believe transparency means the same thing as tint..............................it is actually the opposite in that context. Simply put...................if the glass were 100 % clear and you put 35% tint on it. The tint would be allowing 35% of the light into the car or the opposite................... keeping 65% of the light out. The passenger and drivers side windows in ND can be tinted to block out 50% of the light maximum, this is also allowing 50% transparency..........aka 50% of the light in.......so using 35% is automatically illegal. The little windows behind the doors from which rear seat passengers view out, may be tinted as dark as you'd like................meaning 100%. The rear window may be tinted as dark as you'd like...............meaning 100%. No mirror or metallic reflective tints are allowed anywhere on the car in ND. The windshield may not be tinted below the factory supplied tint threshold of 70%. Do not add any tint to the windshield. Once again if you install 35% tint on clear glass, the tint will block out 65 % of the light. If you install 35% tint on glass with a 70% Transparency and 30% of the light is already being blocked.......................(35%+30%) divided by 2 = 32.5% Transparency.....MEANING............you'd be far under 50% on the drivers & passenger windows and thus in violation ..................because the legal threshold is 50% as mentioned above. I just learned this the other day. The lower the number when it comes to tint the darker it is. Below is a link for each states laws. In MN the law states the windshield nothing can be added. The side and rear windows have to be less than 50% tint meaning it has to be more than 50% transparent with a +/- of 3%. There is also a limit to the amount of reflectivity. With the windows already being 70% transparent that only leaves us with less than 20% left. I did a search for tint products and would prefer pre-cut and 3M but the lightest I could find is 70% tint and that to me would exceed the MN laws for tint.

Also to answer your question, technically the answer is yes. By tint reference the stock windshield is 70% tint from the tint ratings I have found.
Check this guys build thread out, his car is orange but would give you an idea of the tint on a color that is close. His windshield and Fr. side windows would not be legal in ND. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267048 |

I have 15% on the sides and 5% on the back.. Anything on the back in NYS is legal and whenever I pass a cop I just roll down the windows!

First of all, 50% tint is VERY light. For you to attain a 50% level of tint (taking into account the factory 70%), you would have to go with a 70-80% film. For your windows to meter out at 35%, you would need to put on a 50% film. You can calculate this (roughly) by turning the percentages into decimals and multiplying them by each other. For example, 0.5 x 0.7 = 0.35... or 35%
If I were you, I would just put on a 35% film and not worry about it. 35% film will typically meter out anywhere between 27-32% depending on the manufacturer, color, material, etc. Good luck! Tint is one of the cheapest mods, and makes ANY car look better. |

Just do 35%. On all windows. You'll be alright. And drive safe dont get too much attention on the cops.
