Delivery Day... insurance question
on the day that I pick up my car should I call my insurance company before i head to the dealer to add the car to the policy or will the dealer take care of all that for me? I don't remember what i did with my last car but I remember not having to call the insurance company myself

Dealer usually calls your insurance company and sets everything up. I'd give your agent a call and heads up so there's no problems or delays. They just need the vin # and they can fax over an insurance card.
Not here in NY...no insurance = no registration. You need the insurance card for the car.

In NJ the dealer asked for the insurance carrier/policy # and did call them though I called as well the day before to ensure they knew my trim was a v6 not a V8, had On-Star, etc. The Dealer had faxed over a copy of the window sticker and the following week I called the carrier's customer service to ensure they had rated my car properly.
So net-net - doesn't hurt to call.

Do you have to register your car before you can take delivery?? and you can't register your car until you have an insurance card for that car???? Sounds strange to me...Don't they have Temporary tags in NY?

not sure how temp tags work (I would imagine it also requires temp insurance)...usually when you pickup a new car from a dealer in NY...it's fully registered and insured. NYS requires insurance on all vehicles. You can't even cancel your insurance without proof that the registration has first been canceled.

Most insurance companies will give you 30 days but the best bet is to call them and ask them directly...

I called my insurance company ahead of time to check pricing. At delivery the dealership made a copy of my current insurance card on that Monday State Farm had the info from the dealership around noon time my State Farm agent contacted me to go over everything to make sure.

IMO...it's smart. Less chance of getting hit by some moron w/o insurance.

In NC you have to have insurance on the car you just bought before the dealer is allowed to give you the keys. You can either do it yourself or have the dealer call up your insurance company and have them fax the paperwork over to them but either way you can't leave with the car until it's insured.
