Air conditioning effect on power
I was driving yesterday evening and turned on the air and the noticeable reduction in power kicked in that I've grown used to over the past 5 years. I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl and when the air is on, I can really tell a big reduction in acceleration. For those lucky ones that have received their cars and have used the air conditioner - is there a noticeable reduction in power/acceleration?

The simple answer to your question is...........NO..............This not a 4 cylinder Dodge, it is a 400++ hp 6.2 liter V8 Camaro. I live just outside Houston, Texas and use the AC daily. In the 3 weeks I have had my car it has never felt sluggish or lagged when the gas pedal is pushed........it just runs it's A** off. |

Good deal. I figured as much but never hurts to ask. I've never had a V6/V8 before so my only history is with a whimpy Geo Storm, Tiburon and Stratus. Thanks for the reply.

even so im sure someone will come out with a clutch disengage system for the AC. Ive seen them for almost ever car out there that uses throtle over wire. Basically when the peddle is pushed to a certain percent of maximum the AC compressor clutch is engaged essentially shutting off the compressor. Then when the peddle is returned under this percent the clutch is disengaged. Usually cost like 60.00-200.00 bucks and sometimes require little wire splicing if any.

I have not been able to notice a difference, but I have also not actually tried to look for one. Besides, even if the air takes 26 HP I still have 400 HP to spare…
No, but seriously maybe one of the shops with a Dyno, could do a comparison for us with AC on and AC off??? Just a thought.

yeah, in most cars that i have noticed, the aircon doesnt effect it much at all, as long as you have about 250 horse power, less than that, you can tell more readily

Well if your running a quarter mile or a race you don't turn it on. Otherwise yea it zaps a tiny bit. Did you want to melt and cook?
It's got the same 134A type of compressor that every GM has had for many years. It's ultra reliable compared to the old leaky GM Freon compressors in 1-2-3 gens. |

I can't even feel the a/c compressor cycle in my Scion xB. Doubtful you'll know when it's even on in this car.
I've also read differing opinions on gas mileage. Basically, it will be just about the same whether you have the windows up and the a/c on, or the windows down and the a/c off. John B.

When I had my 04 GTO I always felt it ran a little better with AC on. Perhaps I was just more used to it because I live in AZ but it seemed to me that the AC made the power curve a little more linear. Not sure if that is possible but seems to me to be so.

but, the drag that is created has the same reduction in gas mileage as the A/C. so im sure it would slow it down a bit. proable not noticable.
this was on mythbusters.
