XM / Onstar antenna; How does it work?

Need some help from the electronic guys here, or persons that have knowledge of the electronic workings of the XM/Onstar antenna. Planning some customizations on an upcoming Camaro and need to know the following;

1. Is it absolutly necessary for the shark fin antenna to be located outside the vehicle? (If placed say, in the trunk, will it still be able to recieve, but maybe just not as well; Cell phones work inside our cars)

OR, if the outer housing is removed and the internal electronics are housed in another plastic/fiberglass housing will it work?

2. Does Onstar work on GPS (that require direct line of site) or is it purely a cell phone antenna, and is that why it can be covered with the plastic sharkfin?

3. Are the antennas for the 2010 and 2011 model the same as far as the external antenna goes?

4. Will other models of onstar or xm radio antenna work? Could they be separated out? (e.g. take the XM portion of the antenna out of the sharkfin and replace with a separate xm antenna elsewhere)

These questions may seem strange, but trying to get some additional information before a relocation attempt is made. Any information, with as little speculation as possible, will be appreciated. Hopefully this will not be considered the wrong forum, as there have been many complaints about the location of this antenna in this forum and my investigation may benifit us all in the near future. Thanks.

On the GPS, OnStar knows where (a) vehicle is, no matter if it is a Camaro or Silverado. They know where it is. I called OnStar once, and they knew the road I was on when I called to ask a question about something. Not sure on any of the others questions. I did see that the shark fin has been relocated to the truck on the conv.

You can hide it in the mirror. The signals will go through the plastic housing without a problem.

I know 2SSRS is working on this and hopefully he'll git-r-done
After doing a HUD add-on, this should be a piece of cake for you 2SSRS

Trying to purchase a spare Sharkfin for a 2011, but just want to make sure the 2010 and 2011 electronics are the same (most likely are, but not sure).

2011 and 2010 are different, and
they are different from sunroof and non-sunroof.

Thanks Becky. Guess I'll have to go to Dealership to order. All online GM places only seem to show up to 2010 models.

I did not know that. Different in shape or just signal and function?

OP, I too would like to relocate and hide the sharkfin. It was my ONLY complaint (if you could even call it that) about the 5th Gen two years ago when I ordered mine. I'd still like to get rid of it.
