Ordered Snow Tires + a question

I wrote it ages ago but will repeat it now along with some new information.

The only manufacturer that currently makes a snow tires for the SS is Pirelli. Their Scorpion snow and ice. Tire Rack took my order for them and told me it would be August before they started to be delivered. 4 tires shipped to me $1048.77

Also any ideas of what to put on the SS (rears) once I wear out those P-Zeros in about 4,000 miles (from what I keep being told the rears are only good for 5000 miles and I REFUSE to pay $420 a tire for a tire that lasts only 5000 miles)?

I can't answer your question, but thanks for the tip on the snow tires. I needed to find a set for my 2LT for the winter.

I was hoping to also find a cheap steel wheel (18 or 19) and buy these to fit, but no luck yet.

Still confused on the whole "SS hub and if the 18" steelies will fit the LT" issue.

Thanks again.

SS "Hub"
The SS's are fitting Brembos that have a larger diameter, so the 18" wheels can't get over the brakes. 19" wheels might, but to my knowledge no one has tried.

18" steelies will fit the LT
I can't see this as a huge issue, seeing as how the V-6 versions all use the same brakes, and 18" steelies come as stock on the LS model. Maybe its brand dependent, but I'd be surprised.
IMO 18" would be the best for a snow tire, you want to get some sidewall on there!

Thanks bewolulf80! Ok so how 'bout this--I ordered an LT with the RS package with the 20" wheels. I read in one of the threads that the LT then gets the SS "hub" when the RS is optioned.

So now will the 18" steelies fit? Everything I've read hasn't been definitive enough for me on this question. The Brembos are not a factor since it's an LT, but will the hub accept the steelie? That's the question.

(CamaroSSforme, sorry for hijacking your thread)

I would suspect that the person you were talking to simply swiched the word hub with wheel. Not to be confused with tires! The Camaro team chose to have identical rolling diameters on all the tires, so by changing the wheel diameter all you're really doing is changing the amount of sidewall you get. That means no worries about if your speedo is giving you the correct reading. I can say that all the wheel options use a 5 bolt pattern. I have not seen the official list of the bolt circle or the offsets between each wheel, but seeing as all the wheels are specifically designed for the Camaro, its a very good bet that those are all identical. The 21" wheels are also a bolt on option as well, but you'll sacrifice ride & performance for style by moving up to those beasts. Not to mention $4,700+.

If you havn't seen the LS steel wheels, check them out below. They've got a pretty cool retro look to them IMO. I think they would make excellent snow tires for a V-6 car. I was initially hoping to use them on my soon upcoming SS, then doing some research found out they would not fit over the brakes. Rather than getting snow tires I may well keep my fiance's 1998 Caviler for those snowy, salty days. Somehow, that's the cheaper option than 20" Pirelli snow tires!

To the OP, if you're only getting 4-5K miles out of those rear tires, somebody's doing some serious burnouts / drifts! Gotta ask yourself how much that burnout is worth. My plan is to get about 12-15K out of them (or more if possible) and then have the worlds smokiest burnout ever on my way to the tire shop.

Question: those are designed for SUV's. Any potential issues with that other than the obvious "no racing for me".

Great info, KJS! Have you test-mounted the wheels to make sure they fit? Just checking. I was going to order the steelies but this has got me second-guessing. Thanks for the tip.

This is good info. My 2SS is going to be my daily driver and I drive over 65 miles a day (32 each way to work) and you know I'm going to be taking her out a lot... so figuring out how many miles I am bound to get on these tires before I have to fork over a grand for new one (plus mount and balance...) wow, I sure hope it is 15k at least, that would mean a grand a year on tires! Yikes! I am past the burnout stage (except when I am going in to have new tires put on of course), so that's not too much of a factor.

I see burnouts (unless you are lining up for a 1320) as poor throttle control (haha) I'm all about traction and launching!

It's kinda like Gov. Ventura's idea of gun control "2 shots through the same hole at 25 meters"

Throttle control "catching just enough traction to stomp the throttle to the floor while you glance at the rear view mirror to see the other guy smoking his tires..."

I've gotten 2nd set of rims(18") for my LT/RS. Tires are going to be way cheaper and the ride a little better..

I tried to research the pirelli brands. Each of the tires showed a minimum of 40k for the tires. This is for the ZR rated summer tires. I am hoping I get much better than 15k.

35k at least.

There has for over 8 months been a question re the SS "HUB" on the LT with RS.

It has nothing to do with diameter.

See some posts member Hylton wrote on this last winter. There are link and offset differences.
