Talking crazy son

I know everyone has their story of how long they waited for their Camaro, how much they anticipated getting their Camaro, and how they finally got their hands on their Camaro. So here's my story.

I’m 55 years old (OMG!) and married. I’m a grandpa. I had a ’72 340 Duster when I was young, and my best friend had a ’69 Camaro with a built 327. We were the terrors of our neighborhood. My dream car USED to be a Shelby or a Roush Mustang. (I know, I know! Boo! Hiss!) Then I got my Inferno Orange SS. (6-speed, of course.) Wow! Holy crap! THIS is the ultimate dream car! What the hell was I thinking?

My son owns a small construction company. He’s always borrowing my pickup when one of his trucks is in the shop. So he calls me back in June—around Father’s Day—and says he’ll meet me in the parking lot where I work and swap cars. So there I am, waiting, when I see a new Camaro coming across the pavement. Hmmm. Looks pretty nice. Then I realize he’s driving it. I think, ‘Wow, how did he swing THAT as a loaner car?’ He pulls up sideways, taking up two parking spots. As he climbs out I say, “You can’t park like that.” He tosses me the key and says, “Park it how you want. It’s yours.”

Yeah, that’s right. My son GAVE me a frickin’ 2010 Camaro SS! I was stunned. (Duh!) I was speechless. (And I’m a writer!) I was . . . glad as hell I raised such a great kid! Crazy, but in a GOOD way.

My wife was NOT so pleased. She thinks our son is crazy in a BAD way. Crazy? Come on! He gave me—I mean us, dear—a new car! (Her Camry got booted out of the garage. Sorry, honey!) She has driven it—very carefully. She really doesn’t like speed. After we go out ‘putting’ around, I literally drop her off at the curb and tell her I’ll be back in ten or fifteen minutes. Then, watch out neighborhood! The terror is back! (I’m really careful. I swear.) When I get back she asks, “Got it out of your system?” And I say, “For now.”

Now I know ‘anticipation’ is all part of the appeal of getting a new car. Hell, I’ve bought enough over the years to know what’s it’s like. But I have to tell you, the ‘surprise’ I got that day beats the ‘waiting’ hands down! I know I SHOULD feel guilty. I mean, someone just GAVE me a bitchin’ car! It’s like winning the lottery. (Well, not quite.) Now if you feel I didn’t ‘earn’ it, have YOU ever raised a teenage boy? Huh? It ain’t easy!

One last thing. I’ve never ‘named’ a car in my life. I mean, they’re just cars. But I’ve been taking such good care of this one that my wife says I ‘baby’ it. So now when we get ready to go somewhere she’ll ask, “Are we taking Baby?” And you know what the answer to that is!

Great post! Welcome to the "Camaro Anonymous Club"...
Remember to say "Yes, I have a Camaro and I love it!"
Wish my son bought one for me, but I had to get mine the old fashioned way...I bought it. Congrats!

Nice story, Great son! Fantastic car.

Did he ever pump you for what color you might like? Or what kind of car you might want?(Think back)

All his construction equipment is orange. Go figure! As far as cars, he's a Chevy guy. Said no way could he ever buy a Ford, dad's wishes or not. But I'm still glad. It's MUCH better than a Mustang!

He didn't get one for himself, but he knows where I keep the keys! He's polite enough to ask if he can borrow it, and of course I've told him to take it any time he wants. Sort of the best of both worlds for him. And I actually trust him with it!
