Brake pad question

Just bought a set of Ebc reds. Car only has 8000 miles on it. Just tired of the dust. The new pads seem to grab better and are quite. Noticed the old pads on the front are different. They have 2 metal circles on each pad. The news one don't. Just wondering what those circles where for.

I think I found the answer. They look like roller skates. I think they are for anti squealing.
