Camaro stops running

Has anyone has this problem? I have a 1992 RS 305 V8 and twice, once while driving and once sitting at a stop light, the car just stops running. The best way I can describe it is as though someone has turned the light switch off. I wait a few minutes and I can start it again and it seems to run just fine. Have had it to the shop on both occasions and they cannot get the problem to duplicate. Had the fuel pump relay switch replaced about a year ago. Anyone have any thoughts?

Possibly the pump itself? My '92 RS 305 went through 2 fuel pumps, but when they went out that was it, no starting it back up.

Camaro Stops Running

Apparently it's not the fuel pump because I can restart the car. Have talked to the mechanic and the new catalytic converter has no bearing on this issue. Any other thoughts?

That happened to my old mans Celebrity station wagon. The CPU was going bad. He spend around $600 to get a new board. Computer related issue.

Okay, thanks so much. I will advise my mechanic and see where we go from there.

Yup - had the same issue - buy some anti freeze for the gas tank (methyl hydrate me thinks) and put it in - usually white bottle. It absorbs water which sometimes forms in the gas tank - like mine did when sitting for 7 months. I put it in - and viola it does not do it anymore.

I had the exact same problem back about a year ago and also thought it was the fuel pump, it wasn't. the problme that you are having is with your mas airflow senser. It ia a chip that measures the air flow from your intake down into your engine to make sure it is being ventilated properly. When the chip goes bad it doesn't signal properly so the computer shuts the car off to prevent a blown engine. The chip is housed in a piece of plastic pipe right at the back of where your air filter covers go down from two to one right there in the very front of the engine compartment.

There are two fixes. 1) you can just unplug teh wire form it and leave it hanging. as long as the computer doesn't receive a bad signal you are good. No signal means a good signal for the computer. 2) spend about $35 on a new one. I got a new one from an Auto Parts store. Walk in and tell them you need a "mas airflow senser" for your camaro and if they know anything abou their job they can get it for you really fast.

Its not a fuel pump, your cat, your MAS, or your computer.

Bad pump = no start
bad cat = rough running, smelly, chokes it self out, poor flow, hesitation
bad MAF = check engine light
bad computer = dead car

I'd bet its your ignition module. Very common problem. They overheat and the car just shuts off like a switch. Usually you wait a few minutes to let it cool and it starts back up. very easy and cheap fix. Its under the dist. cap. take off the cap, pop off the rotor button and its right there. unscrew/unplug it and replace it. don't forget the heat gel. easy job.

I agree it's sounds like the ign. module. Very common. He has an RS which does not have a MAF sensor. The ign. module is the the most likely cause.

What he said.

My 91z28 pulled this stunt on me a couple times and I needed a new coil.....twice in about a year. The second time I bought an MSD coil and no more problems. But it pissed me off to holy hell. Happened once at a red light too.

Yea I agree with jrhaus76. Mine would do the same thing everyday after being on for a while. I changed the ign. module and starts every time and stays.
