I pay around $300 every 6 months for state & county taxes plus it's $40 a year for plates & it's an additional $10 because mine are personalize so I think you are better off steering clear of good old VA.

Some states (IL) are flat-fee, meaning every vehicle is the same charge year-to-year. Some states (NM, at least when I lived there) charge based on the GVWR of the vehicle. In AZ, we pay based on a percentage of the value of the car. Under this scenario, new vehicle owners bear the brunt of the registration fees, then they fall as the vehicle ages. My '95 Montero was under $75 for two years; my Camaro will be several hundred next April...for one year.

When I moved from California to South Carolina this summer, I thought my registration/tax costs would go way down.
Boy was I wrong! Unbelievably, it costs MORE to insure my car in South Carolina than it did in California. In addition, I had to pay about $250.00 MORE to register my care in South Carolina than I did in California. At least my mortgage is cheaper! |

I paid 230.21 in Kentucky for a 2010 2SS. 27.00 registration and fees and 203.21 in taxes. All three of my older Camaros were 21.00 apiece.

I'm confused???
PA resident here and all I pay is $36 a year for registration. Inspection is about $45. What are all these $$$$$taxes that everyone is talking about. The only tax I have ever paid on a car is sales tax. |

personal property taxes. a lot of places use them instead of local sales taxes. yes, I pay about $600 per year in property taxes on the 3 cars I own, but that and the real estate tax I pay on my home (about $1200 per year) are the only local taxes I pay. they're some taxes business's pay, but for individuals that's it. |

My 2012 SS/RS $550.01! I have a custom plate and live in AZ. That's just for one year! My boyfriend's 2012 1LT/RS was over $400. I can't even imagine what it would cost to register a ZL1 out here.

Wow! I didn't realize how expensive other states were. Just got my renewal notice in the mail yesterday and $55 doesn't sound so bad now.
