Looking to do gears cant decide 3:73 or 4:10

The Camaro seriously needs new gears because its so heavy and hard to get the most out of the powerband.

I want more jump off the line and midrange but I dont want nasty noise and whine or be over reved at highway speeds. I tend to cruise now on the highway in 4th gear mostly and then 5th at speeds of 80-105MPH

Can owners of both sets of gears comment on how their cars feel, any increased noise or feedback associated with the swap?

Its costly and expensive and I want to do it only 1 time. Car is street driven and will get a supercharger after the new year.

I had 4:11 in an older Mustang and it was brutal on the highway and I do not want that.

The thing that surprises most 5th generation Camaro customers is that there is little to no additional noise or whine with any of the gear ratios when they are properly set up. For forced induction applications on M6 Camaros we usually recommend 3.73s but if you have a solid suspension package and some driving ability then 4.10s are freaking awesome. Due to the more aggressive gearing in the A6 transmission I recommend 3.73s either way.

Car is a manual I wish I could afford to try both out but no dice this time of year.

Supercharged SS your car is pretty wild how does it cruise at 90 and what RPM is it at?

Yeah i dont even know who to go to for the set up of the gears. I have read on the forum some guys have bad whine, others have blown gears etc. I just want something comparable to the 3:45 just with more fun.

I do plan to do a blower in the spring so you suggest the 3:73? Is the 4:10 just too extreme for a blown car?

With the stock 3.45s you would cruise at just under 2100RPM at 90MPH in 6th gear. Going to 3.73s would put you at 2250RPM. 4.10s would put you at just under 2500RPM. The 6th gear really helps make things more liveable.

I would probably suggest 3.73 then. They have not had any of the issues you mentioned and will give you the grunt you are after. 4.10s are a lot of fun but you need to have the right supporting mods in place first if you are also running a supercharger.

Great info thanks for sharing. I never use 6th I like 4th because the car just has more response. I just think the car needs more power and it will change my driving style some.

I drove a new GT 5.0 one of my neighbors picked it up and I like the off the line respone it had, the car felt much livelier with the SVT 373 gears. from my test drive that Mustang felt much faster than my Camaro by a good margin.

Apex if I did 373 or 410 what would my RPM be in 4th gear and 5th at 80-95mph?

The 2011 Mustang transmission is also gears slightly more aggressively than the SS in addition to the rear end. The lighter weight and more aggressive gearing make a significant difference.

At 90MPH with 3.73s you would be turning 3300RPM in 5th and just over 3900RPM in 4th. With 4.10s you would be turning just over 3600RPM in 5th and just over 4200RPM in 4th.

I was in the same situation a few months ago. I also recieved some great feedback from Apex Chase.. I have a 427 - 675 HP engine swapped into my M6 and decided on the 3:73 set up. Glad I did, I can barely keep it on the road with traction control off in 1st and second, it eliminated alot of the lurching that the engine was looking for with the tall 3:45's in it previously

I have put on about a 800 miles on highway as well and the RPM's in 6th cruising only went up about 200.

If you are keeping it stock, go 4:10, if you are supercharging it, I think 4:10 would be too aggressive for what your looking for, especially if it is a daily driver.

My 2 cents.

I'm glad to hear you found my advice helpful. Your results are right in line with what our experience helping dozens of 5th generation Camaro owners make the swap has shown. Once you cross the 550-600HP mark it is best to go 3.73 unless you have a serious drive train and suspension set up.
