That... or a mustang conspiracy.

Then if they felt the need to, just supply a limited powertrain warranty. What real Z28 buyer would care?

They did other radical stuff like lighter glass.

I would bet 530+ HP at the crank easy.

I'm betting emissions. The LS7 is already on the ragged edge of smog legality, so modding the engine would probably not be possible.

Track car, so sod the emissions

Both the Z28 and ZL1 are beating very impressive RWD cars. Very impressive for what is essentially a pirated OZ mid priced sedan.

Still the real HiPo bargain in the Camaro lineup is the 1LE.

My Guess:

CAMARO 1LE
NÜRBURGRING LAP TIME 7:46.69 (Coupe)
I'd guess around 7:50 considering the GM corporate track difference.

Car is a good deal but seriously?

It might do well until the long straight near the end, but the ZL1's sheer power would put some serious distance on the 1LE, IMO.
I would totally agree.

Quote from a recent review that was of all the Gen 5 V8 cars run at one track with a few Mustangs too.

"Around the 2.9 mile test loop, Chevy compared the Z/28 to some interesting benchmarks – its siblings, the 1LE and ZL1, and its arch enemies, the Mustang GT500 and Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Interestingly, the car with the most power, the GT500, also posted the slowest lap time, clocking a 1:59.97. The Laguna Seca did a bit better, running a 1:59.05, followed by the 1LE at 1:58.85. Despite the intensely technical nature of the test track, the ZL1 was still able to use its superior horsepower compared to the 1LE to run a faster 1:56.58, but it was the Z/28 that delivered the best time at a mere 1:53.71."

On a technical track the ZL1 is 2.27 seconds faster than a 1LE. (Which is about the same as the 2.87 seconds between the ZL1 and Z28.) On a long course like The Ring which has a ton of high speed zones it will not even be close. The ZL1 with an extra 154hp, better brakes, better cooling and no speed limiter the 1LE not even in the same league. Sorry.

It would be like a ZL1 guy arguing that his car can beat a Z28. If both cars are factory stock not see much of a chance of a ZL1 beating the Z28 at The Ring. With better tires a ZL1 could do better. Do all the lighting steps on a ZL1 that was done on a Z28 and again it could be a ton closer..... but then it would be a modded car. Modded does not count when comparing stock cars. Stock Gen5 Camaro on a road course the Z28 > ZL1 > 1LE > SS.

EDIT My guess is the 1LE would be a solid low 8 minute car at The Ring. Best run I would say the car might dip below 8 minutes but just barely.

If they had done the car as a "body in white" car like the COPO it would have worked that way.

Guess to follow tradition of the Gen 1 Z28 they retained the ability to register the car for street driving.

I have heard that GM does a lot of substitution on cars when testing. For instance, they have substituted LS7's with added cam etc to emulate the horsepower of an LSA while testing other components. But might they have tested the ZL1 chassis with the stock SS engine at some point (before it was even named 1LE). Dunno, but I bet they have tested that configuration somehow... maybe at the Ring too in wrap mode. Anyone from GM that's in the know may be able to enlighten us!

Yeah it's getting pretty ridiculous over there. He is hell bent on the Z/28 not being able to race ANYWHERE. Even if that were the case, look at the target market of who is (probably) going to be buying the Z/28. Most people won't even think about taking it to a track..

As for thePil, I don't know who he is or why people on this site have issues with him but it seems a little immature to go out of your way to read his posts, let alone banter with him, on a site dedicated to the Mustang. Can't you guys see you are just feeding his ego?
IF you were to go over to that thread and read the posts you will see that I and others are not making outragious claims. Hell I'm not even that big of a fan of the Z/28 and that is clearly conveyed on my posts. I'm just trying to bring that thread back to reality. You cannot simplay say that "the Z/28 is a huge failure and cannot be raced anywhere"

I am over there not to banter with him, but it is refreshing reading non-jaded GM fanboy posts once and a while

thePill brings up fair points which I enjoy reading. HOWEVER his credibility is shot when he spews a bunch BS generalizations. (My opinion)

If the unmentionable Ford fanboy is bashing the Z/28 that in of itself makes it a success. If he hates it that's a BIG HURRAY for Camaro lovers!
