Chevy definetly went overboard with the SS badging. My wife and I own a non-SC SS Cobalt sedan. While it is a very nice car, it is not a SS. My mom owns a SS Malibu Maxx. Again it is a very nice car, but it also is not a SS. I am still going to buy a SS Camaro if I can afford one, wither it is the top model or not. But I will not buy a SS if it doesn't have a V8.

Well that answered it thanks, and i'm with you the SS badge is used a little to freely, but what would really be the difference between the Z28 and the SS?

I think that there should be some sort of criteria for deciding what deserves a super sport badge. Like maybe a power to weight ratio better than say 12 lbs/hp. using that on recent models that have worn the ss badge, it would include the new turbo cobalt, the monte carlo and the impala, the silverado, trailblazer, the base Camaro. But the malibu maxx, the supercharged cobalts, impalas, and montes, and the tahoe would not make the cut.

There was actually a big difference between the SS and Z28 in the 60's. The SS was the high horsepower straight line muscle car. While the Z28 was a high reving light weight track car built to compete in the Trans Am series. As for the RS, it was nothing more than an appearance package. That is why you had RS/SS Camaros and RS/Z28 Camaros.

I believe the Tahoe SS was a concept that never made it to production.

Technically that's true. The concpet was called the Tahoe SS, but when it went to production (model year 2000's I believe), it came out as the Tahoe Limited. All of them were black 2WD, slightly lowered with the same 345HP engine as the Trailblazer SS and the Silverado SS.

So, technically, there never was a Tahoe SS from Chevy.

Either way, that concept (according to my 12 lb/hp rule) didnt deserve an SS badge anyway.

Thanks for the history lesson. My education in the first couple generations is sadly lacking :(

I can't find a Trailblazer SS prior to the slightly de-tuned 395hp LS2 in 2006.

The 03-06 EXT model had an optional 5.3L 290-300hp V8 though. 07-08 made the 5.3 optional on the regular Trailblazer as they discontinued the EXT.

Sorry, I guess I didn't say that very clearly (the conversation was about the Tahoe, so I didn't go into enough background)....all 3 "SS's" (Tahoe, Trailblazer, Silverado) were concepts at the time. They used a 345HP motor...the same one that ended up being used in the Silverado SS (the first one of the 3 to make it to production). By the time the Trailblazer SS came along, the power had been ramped up as you mention.

Of SS vs Z28? for the discussion we have had here.

But for the ultimate top Camaro few can argue against the ZL-1.
