More news out of Tuesday's GMC-Buick dealership meeting in Detroit leads us to another potential Buick product. It is no secret by now that General Motors is heavily investing in the Buick brand thanks to its success in China and impending revitalization in North America. GMI has been told that Buick management has asked that Buick get a new Riviera sometime in the future to further the revitalization.

In late 2007 at the Shanghai Motor Show GM-China revealed a Buick Riviera Concept that was almost exclusively designed and engineered in Asia. Based on the front-wheel drive Epsilon II platform, the car was a futuristic coupe high on style. The car was extremely well-received by the public both in North America and China.

We're told that recently Buick management, including outgoing GMC-Buick General Manager Susan Docherty, asked GM management to add a Riviera to the Buick lineup. GMI has not been told of GM management's response, however we are encouraged that a Riviera could be in the works.

If the Riviera is ever produced, expect it to reflect the Riviera Concept and probably find home on the Epsilon II platform. We at GMI think this would be a nice addition to the Buick lineup and it just so happens Oshawa, Ontario (slatted to build the Epsilon II based Regal) will have the capacity to build a Riviera. To add to it, GM is losing their last midsize coupe (Pontiac G6 Coupe) as we speak. Hmmm....

The Riv was never a big selling car. Why bring it back? Will it create North American jobs? Will it over populate the buick name and bring GM back to square one? This will bring competition to Cadillac. Because a concept looks hot like most due, sure it will be recieved greatly. What age/gender is it geared to? Good luck GM. Never learn. Sorta looks like a glorified Lacross. Wupee.

Overpopulate the Buick name?

You do realize they're down to three nameplates right now?

This would be the perfect opportunity to give Camaro a platform-mate. Stretch the wheelbase a bit, give the car a more upscale interior, throw in a magnetically controlled suspension and give it appropriate Buick styling and you are all there. Epsilon II just doesn't make as much sense as a basis for various reasons.

I hope it can measure up to the 1964 I drove in the late 60's, The watered down versions that came in the 80's didn't cut at all!!

I'm still confused here... I thought Buick was going the way of Pontiac...

I'd like to see this, too. I'm sure something really powerful will eventually make its way into Buick with GM's sudden interest in bringing Buick back to its prime.

totally agree, the 97-04 buick regal GS were 'sort of'this idea, with the 240hp supercharged v6. it certainly wasn't "really powerful", but it was a fun drive for sure.

to be honest, i think that's better looking than the CTS coupe. Looks a little like the Infiniti G37. I'd love to see that car. I mean, from the looks of that, with the 3.6 engine, i'd be proud to drive it.
