Question for Volant CAI owners: Codes or not?

Those that are running a Volant C.A.I. WITHOUT a tune....are you guys getting Check Lights/Codes or not?

ALSO.....do you have the "early" or "late" design?

After doing some searching, it looks like the early Volants had a recessed area and also "bumps" on the inside where the MAF mounts which may have caused turbulence and the CEL/Codes.. It looks like the later ones have since been smoothed out which might have solved the CEL/Codes.

So in a nutshell:
Check Engine Light/Codes?
If you get the light, how often/frequency?
"Smooth" or "Rough" inside tube where MAF mounts?

Like I said, I'm only interested in results from non-tuned cars. Thanks in advance.

VOLANT CAI

I have been running a Volant cai with the Donaldson filter for three months with no codes. This was my first mod to my car. My only problem was they did not provide the right screws for the mass air sensor .I went to Pep Boys and got the right ones.

Was it smooth in the tube where the MAF mounts or did you notice?

Must have been an early model I got also - wrong size hose and bumps on the inside. Thru 'lean' codes regulary on the L99. Returned it after 48hrs after speaking with Volant (Erickson) - not much help - suggested the disconnect the battery routine - suggested a tune. Gonna tune a 'stock car' - $$$ for what. I'll wait and see. It was a nice design though.

CEL would trigger at WOT runs- was reseting CEL regularly in the time I had it. If you drove conservativly, it appears it would stay off. Too much 'unregistered' air getting past the MAF.

Also was ot too happy as to the way sensor seated itself. Appears it should have been able to go in further / seat itself better. Maybe part of the problem.

We did have a few kits go out with a 1/2 hose ive never heard of bumps on the inside of the tube though, You need to disconnect the battery on the new GM's (camaro and silverado) or they will through a check light, I have never suggested a tune to anyone unless we were talking about building more hp not to correct a problem. We have no ongoing issues with this system and we have only built one version so theres no early or late models.

I had one of the first versions, and it would throw a lean code every now and then. It would clear itself though. Did pretty good on the dyno. +10hp/+15ftlbs. I just didn't like the looks so I sold it.

Ok, I was one of the kits with the 1/2 hose that did not fit properly.

I bought a Volant for my 2010 L99,and had some cel issues which were addressed by a tune.Same complaint, unregistered air, causing a lean condition.
I wanted to instal it on my 2011 LS3,and was a little concerned, and I didn't want a tune on this car.So I carefully started to look the tube over to see if there was anyplace air could be leaking in. The stamped MAF rubber gasket, doesn't fit the base of the MAF sensor very well, because it already has a rubber seal on it.This keeps the MAF sensor from lying flat on the pad on the airtube.I carefully trimmed it out with an exacto knife so it would fit over it.Now I have a perfect seal.Having the correct length mounting screws is also critical, because if they are too long they will seem tight, but the MAF sensor will not actually be snug.
Also, the spigot for the breather hose, wasn't completely cut out on the end,and there was actually a hole in the side of it near the end.I trimmed out the end and installed it using a stainless hose clamp. The breather hose is short and comes uncomfortably close to the pulley on the engine.
I reinstalled the unit and drove it about 20 miles tonight and everything seems fine.I hope it works cause I really like the design, and it makes noticable power.
Stay tuned.

Thanks for the input.

After reading Daniel909's post (which sounded like a reasonable explanation to me) I decided to give it a shot and finally ordered the Volant this Monday.

Extra thanks to Blackbean as well . I'll be sure to look for those issues you found when I install mine.
