We visited the USS Pampanito (SS 383) in San Francisco in 2006. If you have never seen the inside of a WWII sub, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Amazingly brave young men operated these boats for months at a time in hostile waters. Weeks of boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror in supremely cramped living conditions.

State of the art '40s tech. A must see for history buffs. Definitely will check it out if time allows. Don't want to miss anything at the Rock & Roll Museum though.

I see on this route you are going through Knoxville on the way back. It would be worth your while to take a 100 mile detour and go over the Cherhola Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon. There's a map below that shows how to get there off the freeway and get back up to Knoxville. Trust me, it will be some of the most fun 100 miles you will ever do. I ride motorcycle down there every year for a week in September.
