Should I upgrade to a ZL1?

Yes, another one of these threads.
But my conflict really is this. I have a 45th ann SS and I use it as a daily driver. It has 30,000 miles in the 24 months I've had it. That's the milage I would be putting on the ZL1.
Do you guys think that would be sacrilege or using the ZL1 for what it was made for?

9/7/13 UPDATE:
Pulled the trigger yesterday. Traded in for a 2013 ZL1 Blue Ray Metallic Auto. Will post pics later. Already getting it's first mod: window tints.

My opinion, if you can afford the loss on your car and have plans to keep the ZL1 stock or stick to bolt ons only, hell ya trade up! Its when you start putting big cams in that make them unpleasant to drive as dailies. I only drive my car a couple times a month, but it really makes you appreciate the car more when you miss it.

Easy to make it a 10 second car as well. They actually look really good in person , if you can afford it get it.

If your gonna drive it that much just don't do anything that's gonna void the warranty which is gonna be hard to do. You won't regret getting it.

That depends, would you ever take it to the track?

I traded my modded SS 4 months ago, it had 85,000 miles on it. In 4 months I have put 9,000 miles on my ZL1. Much better daily driver.

From a economic sense I will go against the majority and say no unless you can afford it. Your gas consumption will double. Your depreciation is going to be substantial. It will definitely be more money out of your pocket.

From a driving point of view, the ZL1 is sooooo much fun.

My suggestion would be to get a econo box and a ZL1.

Funny how a year can change things. I posted asking this very question and was told: (.... ZL1 is a race car., .... why would you drive up the mileage, etc)

I personally ignored these people.

I traded in my SS DD for my ZL1 which I daily drive. I love the car and there are no issues daily driving it. One thing to consider is the additional cost verse driving an SS. A ZL1 does cost a ton more to operate than a SS. So when considering a ZL1 as a DD make sure you budget for the following.

1) Gas. I averaged 19 MPG with my SS and now get 14 MPG with my ZL1 driving the same route. Based on 12,000 miles per year my ZL1 will burn an additional 225.56 Gallons. At $4.00 a gallon for 93/91 octane gas that is an additional $902.25 per year to operate. So a DD will cost you a minimum of $75 bucks more to drive.

2) Tires. As it is well documented the Goodyear tires do not last long on a ZL1. If you stick with the Goodyears I would plan on one set per year for a DD. (With no track time or burn outs. ) So again budget $1000.00 to $1500.00 plus. A bunch of people are moving to the Michelin Pilots that are even more expensive but are supposed to last a ton longer. Time will tell.

3) Maintenance. Most is the same as an SS. Only wear item that is more is the brakes cost more to service. Not much to consider SS Vs ZL1.

4) Insurance. Should not be much more but I would double check your area. For me it was only $2 more a month.

So assuming no additional cost (AKA higher car payment) I would budget that a ZL1 will cost an additional $2000 per year as a DD with 12,000 miles. Other than the cost the car is a great DD and it is a new car so driving one is not sacrilege.

I upgraded back in March from a 2010 SS that had a Maggie on it to my '13 ZL1. I do regret making the move since the SS was paid for and of course the HP on the SS was just about the same as my ZL1. Of course I can't turn back time so now I have to make the best of what I have. Having a factory warranty again is nice but I don't think it was worth me going in the hole again for 5 years.

Ya only go around once! Go get it and enjoy it! Don't worry about people's fuel economy opinions because once you feel the power of the car it won't matter. The ZL1 has excellent economy when you factor in the hp. I traded in my 10 2ss/rs and I can tell you the cars are not even in the same zip code! Go enjoy the car you want!!

If you want to save it, then don't use it as a DD. If you want to use it as an investment don't, a mutual fund will make you more money. It is very hard to own this car and not drive it all the time!
