Name that sound!

I'm driving a clunker. Okay, not really... the car actually has performed magnificently since day one, 43,000 miles so far, ridden hard and put away wet daily.

But I am mystified: When the car is idling, in "park" (V6 auto), and I depress the brake pedal, there's a "clunk." When I release the pedal, another "clunk." I can do it all day long (although, eventually that becomes dull). Clunk on, clunk off. Seems to coincide with the pressure required to activate the brake lights... just barely over a light touch.

However, in any position other that "park," there's no clunk whatsoever. Even neutral... nothing. Silent as the grave. I could do THAT all day long, too (also pretty boring, however).

So... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT CONFOUNDED, DANG- BLASTED, COTTON- PICKIN' CLUNK?!?!?

It's the shift-lock.
All autos have them to make sure you can't move the gear lever out of P without the braking.

Sorry, it's a "clunk, clunk, clink," because after I hear it, my wife and I always toast with our wine goblets...

We certainly apologize for the frustrations. Have you been to a dealership yet for a current diagnostic? Please let us know if you would like any assistance in setting up an appointment.

That sounds like a mustang.

Have the dealer check your tranny fluid level.

I had a 1972 Chevy pickup that had a shift kit put into the transmission before I bought it. Whenever I put it into reverse it sounded like the transmission was going to fall out. Loud clunk.

It's quite certainly the shift- lock... I'm a little embarassed that I didn't figure that out on my own, but it is certainly nothing to do with the transmision, or anything "wrong."

And, to clarify, we don't really toast by clinking our wine glasses together. It would be wrong to advocate drinking wine in a Camaro... Camaros are sort of a beer- only thing. That, Def Leppard, and a mullet, dang- nabbit!

My old 2012 V-6 did that when i put it in reverse and let off the brake. my 2012 SS does not do any clinking, clonking, or chunking.
