How much can the LS3 clutch handle ?
I was planing a build im just curious could the LS3 clutch handle 480-500 rwhp ? I plan on a CAI, 1-7/8" LT's with cats, Catback exhaust, Cam & tune !!! nothing more than just a fun car with no trips to the drag strip.

Mine held around 700 rwhp not spraying a full shot out of hole, using a progressive starting at 10% & full ramp to 100% in .8 sec. Never hit it with the full 200 shot out of the hole. Probably about 20 high to mid 10 second runs on the clutch before it finally slipped all the way through 2nd gear on a run that was an NA run. Next run the clutch still hooked, but broke the trans output shaft on the launch. Clutch still didn't look too bad when we pulled it, I expected way more heat checking on the flywheel/pressure plate than I found when we tore it down.
One thing is to get these cars to 60' good, you pretty much have to slip the clutch on the launch, due to the big wheels & 3.45 gears. If you don't smell clutch after a launch to me that means that you could have gotten a better short with a different launch technique. This is just in concern with the stock clutch. Right now I'm pretty sure the next thing I'm gonna break is the drive shaft, I want to change it now, but don't have the $ after so many drive train repairs on this car & many other projects going on. My 3rd clutch in 9k miles will be going in as soon as I get my monster from Gforce. I had nothing but problems with my Fidanza from jump street. So back to a single disk for me.

drag radials are awesome tires but the hard on clutches/drivetrain simply because you are putting a softer compound tire tread with a hard wall. (Stickier tires means better traction but hard radial walls means something else in the drivetrain is going to have to absorb some of the increased troque) ET Streets or ET Drags are easier on your clutch/drivetrain because the softer wrinkle wall eases the torque load on the rear end and trans (not to mention you will also have a better shot at better 1/4 ET.)
If you want 500rwhp out of your LS3 and want your stock clutch to have as many happy 1/4 mile passes, i would invest in some smaller and lighter wheels (i.e. 17" bogarts or Welds etc...) and matching ET Streets or ET Drags. You will notice the big difference the weight reduction and traction alone will make on you 1/4 time and you will be almost as happy as your clutch will be about not having to turn 20" (or 21") wheels at the request of a flywheel turning over well over 500hp/500tq

550 rwp with 4K miles on the stock clutch since the S\C install.
No issues. But I don't launch the car hard and I don't track it. I've got a ZR1 clutch on the shelf, but the stock one just keeps working |
