Ginger the Vert new best MPH, slower ET. Stupid 28" tires.

So I finally made it out to the track, It's been almost a year since I have been. My best is 12.35 @ 112.91 w/1.89 60 ft and today i ran a 12.48 @ 114.16.

I have always said 28" tires were too big for our heavy, under geared cars and tonight proves it. I could not get out of the hole AT ALL with these giant meats, it just kept bogging. With my 26" tires I rode a fine line of getting a decent hook or spinning. I couldn't get these big ole 325/45 17 M&H tires to spin at all. The only good thing was that I was able to cross the traps in 3rd and that probably accounts for the slight bump in MPH.

I don't really know what is next. I want to finally install that 231/236 cam that I bought almost a year and a half ago so I can have that nice lumpy idle and finally break into the 11's, but I know a clutch will soon follow.

OR....

I was thinking about finally biting the bullet and getting a 9" set up with some 4.10 or 4.30 gears. That will solve the getting out of the hole on these giant tires problem and I won't be paranoid about blowing up my stock rear AGAIN every time i go to the track.

I was thinking about downsizing to some 26s but with my car being so slammed I like how the 28s raise my car up a little. Plus I sold my 26"fronts to get 28" fronts so I could drive around town with the Welds and not get the traction control lights.

What to do, what to do.....

Tires arent the problem, its in your launch technique. Launch harder.

What 28in tire are you running on the fronts? I'll buy your 325/45 17 if you want to sell them. I can pick them up to.

I'm running the M&H 28" bias ply front runners. Make me an offer...

I'm launching at about 5 grand and slipping the clutch. I'm no stranger to launching hard. Here is a video of me launching my old 98 SS. Good old clutch drop at 6 grand good for 6.79 @101 w/1.49 60 fts. this was with the M6, a 4.57 gear and just bolt ons. I think I was making 380 rwhp. But I know the limits of Ginger's drivetrain. I have already broken an axle and a diff.

You crossed the line in third with stock gears and 28" tires?
I see yours manual 6- higher limits on rpm than auto- didn't know they where capable.
Those m&h are pretty heavy at that size and wide contact, compared to the 17"slick. I had read many of your posts before / when I was looking at those same dr vs the slicks. I agreed at the time about the size- in terms of higher wheel spin off the line. Unfotunately I wanted to keep the same height for looks. My thoughts came down to experience in extreme light weight bicycling rims/ tires. I could feel/see the advantages of the lower rotating mass as I switched between sets. Since I was at not much more than stock-I opted for the lightest and best grip I could get in a dedicated set up (also leaving room for future power up). I have never been disappointed yet-'too big' just doesn't apply.

I understand you use them as DD, so my thoughts are you need higher launch rpm (or a 391 gear). I'd make sure you have as much air in the rears as you can, just lower than excessive slipping, for many
people run theirs too low-adding ET due to wasted rolling resistance.

I also think that cam install will take care of the problem anyways, so I'd keep the wheel/tire set up as is.

Good to see you out running that machine. Just my 2cents.

Tim
Auto is a completely different story. You have the torque multiplication of the converter and your first gear is crazy high compared to ours. 4.03 vs 3.01. Even with your 3.27 rear gear vs our 3.45 rear gear you still have a 22% better gearing for coming out of the whole. If I wanted to match your stock first gear/rear gear combination I would have to swap to a 4.38 rear gear!

Family is great! Our son is about to turn 8 months and wife is 2 months prego! That's one of the reasons I haven't been to the track in forever, hanging out with the family is so much more fun.

As already mentioned above, what tire pressure were you using? This is one of things that I have been playing with in the off season and it has made a huge difference in my burnouts, launches and ET. I normally ran around 17-18 pounds, but I am up to 20 now and it made a big difference.

Started at 17 like I usually do, and kept going up. It was doing the same thing at 25 psi.

Remember, my car, being a convertible is about 300 lbs heavier than all of you.

Oh yeah your old 4th gen was red. I remember you ran a 4.57 at one point.

I'm preaching to the choir, to cut a 1.5 you'll be spending some $$$$ on the rear, up to you.

Sorry I meant "to cut a 1.5 over and over and avoid breaking a stock diff and axles."

I'm not trying to run 1.5 60 fts, I would be happy with 1.79 with just bolt ons.

With these supposed 28.6 inch tall stock tires, gear would be nice.
