Spare tire

This is just a reminder to everyone to be prepared for blowouts.

edit: this blowout happened in furthest left lane (fast lane) to outside of driver front tire. (classic). the next day i saw what i hit. some kind of long tubular pipe with a wierd tang on one end. (the end i drove over). it was extremely early so I guess I was the first one to that coordinate to hit it.

There is no substitute for being prepared for a blowout. I had a blowout on the way to work (scary). Luckily it was very early, not many folks on the highway. (I have AAA, but it's faster if you have everything to just to it yourself.)

My temporary spare (donut) had tons of air because I had to fill it up before. I used the scissor jack and I always carry a good breaker bar and a torque wrench with the (1/2" drive) correct socket and short extension.

However, If I had been in an SUV where the tire is attached under the car, that would have been a mess due to raining.

My advice ---> if you do lots of highway travel, and the tire is under the car, keep that one (or another spare) in the storage area in back, (which is what i plan to do with my other vehicle.) Also I would advise to carry some kind of small hydraulic floor jack.

edit: i would assume new camaro will have some kind of real spare tire or donut.

Unless it's a run flats.

+1 for being prepared. And it’s a good idea to check the pressure in the spare also, because of the high pressure, the air leaks out faster.

I think it will have an emergency inflation system with a tire sealer like the new CTS has and the spare will be an option, also like the CTS

My tire was sliced on the sidewall and can't be repaired, so tire sealer wouldn't work. :(

That's my problem with this system, I don't think run flats would work in that situation either. I hope there is a real spare in the car, I just don't think there will be or it will be an option.

Of course you could always carry one but I want a factory built in mount and compartment, cover all of that good stuff.

so what do you do when you have swapped wheels/tires to a larger style, and your donut wont allow the car to run level? in fact by using a donut you would damage the tire on the other side due to the unevenness of the car...lol


i ride on 17and 18" Z06 wheels. i had to put a donut on once and it messed up my center of gravity and the car ended up slicing into the pass side tire because the car was angled and the fender well cut into the tire.


tho when i go on long trips, i swap my rears for stock salad shooters with regular tires then when i get home, ill swap back to the performance tire.


and i think its mandatory for new vehicles to come with a spare tire. and even if its not, i would imagine the new camaro to have one. tho it would have to be a decent size one or they will have to diminish the size of the regular wheels/tires so that you dont damage steering/alignment components when "limping" to a repair station

Something I can't stand........

I always get flats on Saturday nights. Try finding a tire shop open on sunday....can't ever find one.

I think the Camaro will come w/ a spare.

When I was 16, I had a '78 Mercury Cougar land yacht. My friends and I were driving back from suburban malls to our rural homes at 70 MPH in the left lane of an interstate, when I blew a tire. After a harrowing several seconds getting the car off the road on the right shoulder, I went back and saw the sidewall was completely blown out and shredded. No "Fix-A-Flat" for this job.

I hadn't had the car (or my license) very long, having bought the car a few months prior from an old guy for 700 bucks. I knew it had a spare tire, but I never really took a close look at it until just then...for some reason, even though the wheels on the car were 15-inchers, the spare was a 14-inch wheel. Hoo-ray.

Seeing as how we were two miles from the next exit, it was the hottest day of the summer, and my friends aren't the most athletic in the world, and even in an emergency walking on the side of the interstate isn't the greatest idea ever devised, we decided to sit and wait for a patrol car (it's 1994, and Midwestern teenagers getting cell phones was a phenomenon that was still years away). I mean, it's I-65 in southern Indiana...there's a police car every 100 feet when you're doing 1 mile over the speed limit.

Well, we sat there for an hour and didn't see a single police car, which I'd like to have happen when I'm actually moving one of these days. Tempers were wearing thin, as were our liquid rations, which had consisted of a half-full 20 ounce bottle of RC cola. I said screw it, I'm trying the 14-inch spare. Miraculously, I managed to wedge it over the rear drum and position it so it didn't rub against it (if it had been a front tire, it wouldn't have fit over the caliper of the front disc). So we lopsidedly limped mostly on the shoulder to the next exit (where upon exiting the freeway we immediately came across a 3rd-gen Camaro in Sheriff's hi-po livery, of course), and somehow made our way home from there, even though the area at that exit was terra incognita to us.

So yeah...check your emergency stuff often

I wonder if the Tire Pressure Monitoring System will include the Spare?
I'm actually not sure if GM does... My friend got an alert that he had a low tire on his Toyota Tacoma and he checked all of his tires and they looked good. He decided to check his spare and sure enough it was low and the alert went away.

Last time I played with a Chevy Tire Pressure monitoring system I only remember LF, RF, LR and RR positions. Does anyone know if it also monitors the spare?
