No. I believe they originally appeared on the early Grand Sport Corvettes from back in the early '60s.

More like a Corvette thing.
The original Grand Sports in the 60s were painted the same and the pit crews put stripes of duct tape on the cars front left fenders to tell them apart when they came into the pits.

A lot of cars have used them, but yes it started with the first GS Corvettes. They serve the number of purposes, like telling the cars apart, but also to identify which side the driver was on because frequently cars would go overseas to race as well

In 64 and 65 some of the AC Cobras from Shelby had them as well. I believe it started with the GS Corvettes in the early 60's.
Everyone has taken them since them. The last event I went to had a few Cobras, Corvettes that had them but what was funny to me was a few mid 70's Triumph TR6's and some MG's had them too. |

Same with the skunk stripes, or "LeMans" stripes... car identification.
The1LE black hood is also racing heritage. Cuts down glare for the driver.
