CHECK THIS OUT- DURAMAX vs CAMARO SS

I recently ran across this article in Diesel Power Magazine.
http://www.dieselpowermag .com/index.html

Pretty intersting stuff.

Chevy Silverado Vs. Chevy Camaro - Torque
Duramax Vs. Camaro SS

Everybody is used to diesels being reliable work trucks, but what about hot rods? To drive the point home that diesel trucks really are performance vehicles, we decided to compare an '09 Chevrolet 2500 HD with the 6.6L Duramax diesel and six-speed Allison transmission to Chevrolet's newest muscle car offering-the '10 Camaro equipped with a 426hp V-8 and a six-speed manual transmission. In stock form, the pickup's 365 hp is no match for the Camaro's lighter weight and higher power figure, so we made a single modification to the truck: an aftermarket programmer. For more power via electronic tuning, we contacted Pacific Performance Engineering and explained our comparison. The truck had to be completely stock except for programming, and the stock exhaust (including the DPF), intake, and transmission all had to be retained. We think you'll be surprised at the result.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD
Extended Cab ShortBed
MSRP: $42,430 (plus $1,000 for programmer)
Engine: 6.6L Duramax diesel - PPE Hot + 2 E.T.
Horsepower: 560 hp at 3,200 rpm
Torque: 1,175 lb-ft at 2,300 rpm
0 to 60 mph: 4.4 seconds (estimated)
Quarter-mile: 13.0 seconds at 103 mph
Top Speed: 140 mph (estimated)
Fuel Economy: 16 to 17 mpg
Weight: 6,800 pounds
Seating Capacity: 5+
Cargo Capacity: 60 cubic feet
Towing Capability: 13,000 pounds

How's that for close? For about $8,000 extra, you get a truck that runs the quarter-mile in the same amount of time as the Camaro, has a better 0-to-60-mph time (thanks to four-wheel drive), and almost matches the Camaro in terms of fuel economy-despite being 3,000 pounds heavier. The best part is, the truck seats more passengers, is more comfortable, has six times the cargo space, and can tow and haul an infinite amount more-because the Camaro can't tow at all. Are diesel pickups hot rods? Yes, they are-perhaps the most versatile hot rods ever made.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS
MSRP: $35,380
Engine: 6.2L LS3
Horsepower: 426 hp at 5,900 rpm
Torque: 420 lb-ft at 4,600 rpm
0 to 60 mph: 4.8 seconds
Quarter-mile: 13.0 seconds at 111 mph
Top Speed: 155 mph
Fuel Economy: 20 mpg
Weight: 3,849 pounds
Seating Capacity: 4
Cargo Capacity: 11.3 cubic feet
Towing Capacity: None

That's fine, but what they don't tell you is that it causes severe drive train problems when you do boost those diesels and decide to run them hard. I watch them brake all the time at the drags.

Diesel performance is badass, but very expensive. And, you don't get the looks of the camaro in a truck!

Ok, tune the Camaro and you are still lower in cost, will beat the diesle, and if you go cost to cost you have more room to increase the power in the Camaro to equal price. It looks like I have 8k to play with. I bet I could spend my money well and leave the HD2500 asking where I went.

I just thought it was interesting at their marketing ploy. I have a 2006 2500hd 4X4 Duramax Crewcab. I had a hot rod and didn't even know it LOL

Who feels comfortable driving that beast over 100 mph instead of a Camaro? Anybody? Volunteers?

I don't think mine will make it passed a hundred it is limited, but it rides fine at about 90 down the interstate. They are obviously playing on the popularity of the Camaro trying to market their product which I don't blame them for. People are forgetting that the Duramax is turbo charged. I do know this much about it, it will pull like there is no tomorrow and for those that do not know it is really quite to be a diesel.

Aftermarket programmer for $1k? NFW! Diesel or not I buy these things as a dealer for far less than that from Bully Dog, Hypertech, Superchips, Edge, Ect. Now I could see paying that much if it was a custom tune...even then $700 would be the max in our area of Texas (NOT A HANDHELD).

Link to article: http://www.dieselpowermag.com/news/0...aro/index.html

I tried to call Pacific Performance Engineering to get the specifics on this...says their hours but they are closed. Must be at SEMA or somethin'.

Update: Did some more homework here and it looks like this is a CUSTOM handheld tuner directly from PPE. So it is a custom tune designed by them in a handheld format. So its legit. And yes its $999! From what I read they are the leader in disesel tuning so I'm calling them soon to get them on my list of suppliers.

PPE has several box tunes and for Duramax is the next best thing to EFI live.
Duramax Hot+2 E.T. Xcelerator

Power Level
HP Increase 40 to 425
Torque Increase 97 to 620

Yes you always run the risk of breaking things in both type of cars when you add big HP, but it goes to show you that diesel are a very capable platform and with out other supporting mods it's not going to produce 425-620.

I own both types of cars, my Duramax is set for heavy towing/economy and will supprise you for a 7K lbs truck.

Darn, that means my hubby wasn't lying when he said he could beat me with his 06 Duramax and the performance tune. I drove it with the tune and it still handles like a TRUCK.
